Do you know what special education means? Sometimes not everyone is born the same, some people are born with major or minor problems that hold them back. Their brain just doesn’t function the same as us, which is what makes them need special education. It takes them longer to comprehend little things and children with major brain problems probably won’t ever learn things like the alphabet.
Parents that have children with special needs, “play a big role in their lives.” I decided to interview a parent that has a special needs child, Layla Bazzi, a parent of a special needs child said “Every child’s case is different but I would say depending on the diagnosis, in our case it was at my sons sixth month check up.”
When asked how early on do you find out someone has special needs. “In most cases the child gets overstimulated,” and overwhelmed depending on the surroundings, like if its loud or there is a large group of people, but they are great children.” Not everyone is as loving to their children, foster parents from Selma AL were arrested for child abuse because they were beating a thirteen year old foster child with special needs, the child had “significant” bruises.
Teachers are somebody children learn the most from. Special needs children are extra close with their teachers because they stay with the same teacher most of their school years.
Anita Velasquez from Howe School in Dearborn, Michigan stated that, “You need to be able to recognize the little growth because for regular teachers it might seem like something little.”
“It’s very different it takes a very big team to make sure we are making the right accommodations like if things are bigger, or bright enough.” When being ask how different must her room setup be to accommodate to teach the students.
For my last interview Ahmad Bazzi, A third grader from McCollough Elementary stated, “A person with special needs, needs more time to do things, and goes slower.” Ahmad also thinks that, “they are the same as everyone and they are nice people, my cousin is like that and I love playing with him.”
Children are often nice when it comes to other children with special needs, because they don’t know how to react. “I think that when regular education children get to work with the special needs children it’s always positive and they look for different things they have in common,” stated Velasquez.
