As of recent, in the past few years, the topic of “Are Pitbulls to Dangerous” has been causing a stir through the media. On December 3, 2015, Xavier, only 4 years old, was killed by his neighbor’s four pit bulls. Xavier’s aunt, Laconya Cage, said his 9-year-old sister was also attacked by one of the pit bulls and was minorly injured. The entire nine-minute-long attack was captured on surveillance video. Geneke Lyons, 42; who was Xavier’s neighbor, was convicted for manslaughter, and for possessing dangerous animals. Xavier’s maternal uncle said “He should serve jail time. We can never get my nephew back. This is a mother whose child was torn like a rag doll.” (The Detroit News)
Magnolia Abbas, an 8th-grade student, and a pit bull owner. When I asked her, what are 3 words you can use to describe a pitbull she said, ”rolls, cuddly, fluffy”. I also asked how she feels about people wanting to ban pit bulls “They relieve stress, and only defend themselves like other animals”. I asked her if she had any previous experiences with her dog like aggression and she said: “my pit bull is mute and has never attacked me before, not to me, or anyone else”.
Many think otherwise about pit bulls. “In the 13-year period of 2005 through 2017, canines killed 433 Americans. Pit bulls contributed to 66% (284) of these deaths. Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers contributed to 76% of the total recorded deaths.” (DogsBite.org)
According to this data, pit bulls make up over half of all fatal dog attack since 2005. It seems that these dangerous dogs are a big problem, but there has been no idea of the middle ground come up with yet. It seems this breed is just too dangerous. But on the other hand, according to the American Temperament Test Society, “pit bulls have a temperament passing rate of 86.7%. This is lower than dogs such as the beagle, Border collie, and Chihuahua.” Well, what does that even mean? It means that pit bulls are only subject to attack when felt very threatened, and have much more patience than most dogs. It’s just their native dog instinct.
Recently in the past few years, this topic has been in debate in many humane and animal societies. It’s hard to come up with a solution for something like this when there are toddlers dying to these animals, yet there are people who care for their pit bulls, and it helps them treat their stress and anxiety. For them it’s not just the fact that people are trying to take pit bulls away, they’re trying to take away their friends, family. Dogs can be like that to people for many. If your pit bull was being taken away, how would you feel?
