How Fear Dominates our Lives

Did you know that fears and phobias can sometimes affect people in many ways? There are many different types of fear including fear of heights, spiders, crowded places, germs and much more. Fear is a really unpleasant emotion which is caused by the belief that something is dangerous. It can cause damage to our body and affects most of our decisions and choices.

Leila Farhat, an 8th grade student who goes to middle school says she has a fear of public speaking. “I try my best to avoid public speaking”, says Leila. According to www.brianntracey.com , the average person ranks the fear of public speaking higher than the fear of death. “I start to get nervous and i just black out”. Usually people with a fear of public speaking start to feel nervous, get sweaty palms, and start to get stomach pain.

Janet Whitney a therapist who helps people face their fears says, “fears can paralyze us and make us not open or honest”. According to www.fear of.net, 40 percent of fears begin at the age of 10 while 95 percent starts before the age of 20. Sometimes people can get over their fears but that doesn’t happen much often. “I started traveling to many places forcing myself to do the things i’m afraid of”, says Janet. One of the most common ways to try to get over your fear is to just accept the anxiety and to just not fight it. “Realizing fear is a learned behavior that you can easily unlearn is a way to overcome it”.

Hadeel Almihtar an 8th grade student who goes to Unis Middle School says she has a fear of heights. “I start to panic and lose my balance and feel like i’m going to just fall.” According to WWW.DailyMail.com, Fear of heights develop between the ages of 15 and 25. “I always avoid fun places like going to Cedar Point with my family because of my fear of heights”, says Hadeel.

Fear is just a natural emotion that we need to try to overcome. We also feel fear in less dangerous situations like taking a test or a job interview. You can overcome a fear by being aware of it, but it will take some time. Learning to fight your fear is the best way. Not just that but also understanding fear and its causes can help us overcome any type of fear we have.

  2. In my opinion I think that facing your fear is important because it will effect you in the future and also in the past. They are important, because if you don’t ever face your fear it will stay with you for many years to come. And some fears that I never even knew could be possible to fear. I used to be scared of spiders, but I got rid of this fear by learning fun facts about spiders. So when you learn new thing you it might be a benefit of might even get rid of the fear.

  3. I can relate to this. I think everyone has at least one fear. I have many fears one of them is riding on roller coasters. Im always scared to ride the big roller coasters and I think a fear can lead to more fears because as you know I’m scared to ride the big roller coasters maybe because i think about me getting dizzy and things not ending up well . If you have fears and you are willing to get over them you might get even more fears. basically we think negative things and thats what leads to fears. I did try facing this kind of fear but i kept saying negative things for example ”this ride isn’t too bad but maybe the other are worse” and that can add onto my fear. But I think others may be in a different situation and they can get over their fears.

  4. Yes, I do agree that fear controls most of our decisions, but how do we learn to accept fear? Surely it cannot be as easy as this article makes it sound. Maybe you could’ve included how we can learn to control it. How about what part of the brain it is that triggers fear? Why do we sense something completely harmless is dangerous? I have a strange fear of heights, even when i know there is no possible way I can fall unless i make a mistake or do something I’m not supposed to do. Why is this? i really enjoyed reading this and how you introduced this topic for my to think about, but you could’ve given a little more information.

  5. I agree, Fear really does rule our lives. Many people won’t live their life to the fullest because of Fear. I say the only way to live our lives to the fullest is to overcome your fears. Fear is a natural emotion, but we need to overcome it to enjoy our lives. I think I would rather live life to the fullest without fear then live with fear for the rest of my life. I agree with the story, Fear does make us lie or make us not open. So fear is a unpleasant emotion that needs to be overcome with bravery.

  6. I think that having a fear of something is normal. A lot of people have fears I don’t because if I did I would of face my fear I know a lot of people that have fears of something I think if you are one of the people then I think you should face it and try to end it if you don’t then you are going to be scared of your fear for many years.

  7. I used to have a huge fear of roller coasters but my aunt was oblivious to this. So she went and bought tickets for me, my siblings, and my cousins. She wasn’t able to return them so I reluctantly went. At first I didn’t want to go on any of them but I realized I was just wasting my breath. In the end I realized if I didn’t think about it until I was already on, it would make things easier. I think it’s really important to face your fears, or else it would end up getting out of control. If I hadn’t done that I would still be afraid and won’t have all the awesome memories of Cedar Point and Michigan Adventure.

  8. I also think you should face your fears because they might always be a part of you or you will grow out of it. Fears usually stays as a part of you and that could effect you physically, mentally, and much more.

  9. Not only do I feel like fear has dominated our lives but I also know what fear feels like. I’ve always had this HUGE fear of the dark and honestly I still do. I’ve always gotten scared that in the dark someone could creep up and I couldn’t visibly see them. It’s so serious that I have about 3 or 4 nightlights and a sound machine just in that one bedroom. I honestly don’t think that I’m going to overcome that fear in the near future but I now I will one day… HOPEFULLY!

  10. Fears are just things your mind use’s to get to you. So instead of thinking your going to fall off of something high up you could just try to clear your mind and think of something else. And fearing death is irrational, if it happens later why do you fear it now or why are you just afraid of it

  11. I think people should try to overcome their fears because fears sometimes keep people from doing fun things. I used to be scared of heights which kept me from going on roller coasters and on airplanes but I’ve overcome my fear and now I have so much fun on roller coasters and I always look forward to going on airplanes on our way to our vacation. I think that facing one of my fears helped me face other fears. Overall I thought this topic was very interesting and I makes me want to help people overcome their fears.

  12. I believe that fear is what limits us as humans. It stops us from accomplishing the goals that we are capable of accomplishing. For example, I’m not extremely afraid of heights, but I wouldn’t go skidiving. Maybe I could be the greatest skidiver ever, but I’ll never know because of fear. This story has a great point about fear.

  13. In a sense fear is important to us overcoming your fears is a great accomplishment but fear is what keeps us safe.If we are scared to go near a dangerous animal we wont get hurt. If we are scared of death we will try avoid dying at all cost.
