Global Issues Over Celebrity Gossip

When you turn on the T.V, the first thing you see is celebrity news and unnecessary gossip, leaving it hard to access any kind of real news. I find that T.V news needs to give more coverage and time for global issues and international news rather than celebrity gossip. You may not realize it, but we spend a large sum of money in order to access these “top secret” celebrity information. The media also gives way too much attention to Hollywood gossip compared to problems like politics and crime. Our focus is being strayed away by such things and leaves us less informative about actual news.

Have you ever thought about the money being spent by not only us, but by both parties. According to theweek.com, lawyers are only willing to pay more than 25,000 dollars just to make sure their clients photos aren’t leaked. Meanwhile, the press freely offers to spend 2 million dollars just to get ahold of a corpse’s photo that just so happened to be famous. Think about it, so much is being spent on people that just so happen to have more money and slightly more talent than us in rare cases. In my opinion, our valuable money can be spent on better things that would actually make a more positive effect on the community like charity to the needy or even for personal use.

According to people-press.org, 40 percent of media coverage is being spent on celebrity news and gossip while only 5 percent went towards things like poverty, education, the economy, and politics. Since news coverage can vary from topic to topic, I believe that each should be getting at least the same amount of time and attention as the other one. Unfortunately, the exact opposite seems to be happening. We are spending too much time on a topic that isn’t even going to be relevant when we’re older, which leads us to another issue.

Our focus is such a big part in our life, yet we seem to forget about it. What we focus on can make a big difference, and it seems being heavily influenced by magazines like E! News, Vogue, and Cosmopolitan. TMZ has nearly 119.7 million global views over a course over a month. Important news stations, on the other hand, only managed to get 1.567 million in it’s prime time. From what I see, our focus isn’t being directed in the right path, leaving us clueless about things like war and elections, but leaving us an experts when it comes to talking about people like Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian. Zeinab Al-Ghanem, a middle school journalist, thinks that “Too much attention is being directed towards celeb magazines instead of the real world, not allowing the people to see what is actually happening to our today.”

Overall, I think it’s safe to say that media outlets focus more on gossip and Hollywood news rather than important current events, leading us to change our focus to the same thing. Once our focus changes, so do our goals, showing us as a person and who we are. Whether or not you mind celebrity gossip, international news should have at least similar percentages when it comes to coverage. These are my thoughts when it comes to news and how it should be presented.

  1. People get paid to do stuff like this. People even get paid to even take pictures of celebrities. TMZ is a show where they talk about celebrity news only and not that much of people watch the show anyways because now the show is just like un populated and cause of how boring the show became. Why do they even care about these celebrities private part of their life I get that its their job but like seriously come on for example they see Kim Kardashian going to get Ice cream with no makeup on two hours later the news comes on like ” Kim Kardashian went out to get Ice cream with NO MAKEUP TODAY ”

  3. I agree we should focus on the real problems of what’s happening today rather than all the celebrity drama. When I watch the news I would rather know if there are any important issues or problems going on than seeing stories about celebrities and their issues which most people don’t really care about.

  4. This article is nice written and I think that because not every thing has to be social media and I think that every one is to caught up with social media instead of the real world and maybe we should stop having drama on TV with celebrity’s cause that is what catches our eyes the most (celebrities).

  5. I tottaly agree why should we care about one little thing that happens to someone just because they are famous. Now you see someone start to cry just because a famous person started dating someone else. Why cant we just see whats going on in the world and not worry about all this drama.

  6. I found it interesting that you said that 40 percent of the media coverage goes to celebrity news. I’ve seen that people enjoy listening to celebrity news because they take them as role models. Thank you for helping me learn more about celebrities and how the media works it out.
