Busy, Or Just Lazy?
“I’ll be home from work at 8:30. That’ll only give me 30 minutes to get my homework done. It’s okay, I’ll stay up an extra hour or so to fit in my homework.” You don’t hear students saying that anymore, do you? Now a days it’s “I have a 4 page packet to complete but I also got invited to my friend’s house to play basketball. umm…, I’ll just copy the homework from someone tomorrow.” This is something I personally view as preposterous so I decided to get other people’s opinion on this.
I asked my father for his opinion on this issue considering he was one of the people who juggled a job and school at a young age. He’s had experience with working while in school so I knew his thoughts on this topic would be perfect. When asked if he felt his grades and focus at school decreased because he had to worry about both school and work, he replied “Yes because I worked Tuesdays through Fridays. Had I worked only weekends, it probably wouldn’t of affected my school life as much.” I agree because usually weekends are free.
I also had the chance to interview someone who has a different perspective on this matter. Her name is Aya Jouni and she’s a freshman at Dearborn High School. When questioned about what it is exactly that leads her to believe that homework is something that can just be put to the side and never be completed, she answered “It’s not that I think homework isn’t important, it’s just that I get a lot of homework from all of my classes and I don’t feel like doing all of it so I just go on Netflix and watch The Fosters.” This pretty much answers the question in my title. “Having to be responsible for both school and a job at the same time can have it’s disadvantages, but it has advantages too. For one thing, it helps you become organized and teaches you how to multi-task. And trust me, that’s something you need to have the ability to do as an adult.” Says Mrs.Issa, a 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher at Unis Middle School. “Organization plays a big role in everything you do in life so it’s nice to get practice in ahead of time.” So managing both helped her in the long run.
So as we think,we know that as time goes by students get lazier. Most students today are lazier than students back then. Some people used to cope with school and work and still get their homework done. Now students have a lot of free time but would rather be spending it on unimportant things.
