Lunch, the time of day to boost our energy and chat with our friends. It’s the most exciting half hour of the day to everyone. There’s just one problem: there is no time. Most students don’t eat breakfast, so lunch is their first meal of the day. This year, 7th and 8th grade students have lunch during 5th hour (12:20 p.m.) at Unis Middle School. Many students don’t eat breakfast, so, during class time they are usually tired, lazy, and of course, hungry.
Studies show people that didn’t eat breakfast are tired and cranky. While the ones who ate breakfast, are more positive and have a lot more energy than the ones who didn’t eat breakfast. Eve Taha, an 8th grade student quoted, “When I don’t eat in the morning, I lose focus and feel lazy.” she added, “During lunch, there’s barely enough time to eat our lunch and snacks.” and i definitely agree with that.
During lunch time the kids are all excited and running in the halls on their way to lunch. As they get to the cafeteria, the lunch line is as long as the width of the cafeteria. This is what makes us students eager to cut in line to get their lunch. Fatma Almachy, a 11th grade student, quoted “Lunch is where I chat and have cheap laughs with my friends. Although, I don’t get school lunch because of the line and the time I have, so I bring a small snack from home and munch on that during my lunch time.” This is a great idea, for those who bring their own lunch they have all the time to eat without having to wait in line. And the line would be a bit shorter for the ones who eat school lunch.
Time. Our lunch time is from 12:20 to 12:50, thirty minutes isn’t enough for many student. You might think thirty minutes is more than enough time to eat. But after long hours of learning and listening to the teacher, you’re going to want a break to talk with your friends, and the line is the longest part of this all. The line takes at least 10 minutes with all the people cutting in front of you. Aliaa Taleb, also an 8th grade student explained, “I’m usually one of the last people in line, and by the time I get my food and sit down, Mr.Blessing (assistant principal) starts dismissing tables to their classes.” She also added, “Dearborn schools should add at least 10 minutes to our lunch time.”
Unis Middle School should have extra time for lunch. Knowing how students are feeling about the time and all the amount people in the same lunch, we should do something about about it. The way Fatma Almachy brings her own snack for lunch so she doesn’t waste the time she has, is a good way to save time for yourself and for others. There are many ways of changing the problem and finding the solution. All we need is time.
In my opinion, I believe that we should have more time for lunch to like at least 10 minutes extra like Aliaa Taleb said. Because now I feel with all the new coming students the line is getting much bigger and longer by the time I sit at my table I literally have 10 minutes to eat which seems a lot, but honestly it’s not. What Fatma was doing was a great idea to bring home lunch from home.
