Bump, set, spike… ring a bell? Its volleyball of course!
Volleyball, a sport loved by many, especially in Unis. Almost every girl in the school was excited for the season to start, with all the games, practices and the sport itself. But of course, tryouts came first. Over forty-five 7th and 8th graders came to tryouts, but only 20 of them made the team. Two of the twenty chosen were substitutes.
I spoke to Aya Aode, an 8th grader who tried out and made the team. “The hardest thing about tryouts is probably how much you have to run and jump after I while it really starts to hurt.”
When asked how she felt playing against other teams, some who are defeated, Layla Sabrah answered, “it’s nerve-wrecking, but I just try to stay positive because if I get nervous, I don’t do as well.”
With only 20 open spots on the team, not everyone made it, and they were disappointed after all their hard work and effort. Zeinab Saad, 7th grade, was one of the roughly 20 girls who didn’t make it. “I’m okay with not making it. Just trying out and trying my best was enough to satisfy me. If I wasn’t meant to be on the team, then oh well, there’s always next year.”
This year, the girl’s volleyball team plan on bringing home the trophy and all the glory that comes with it. And hopefully, they will, especially with all the effort they put into it.

I like how you have sounds and motions in your lede, Fatmeh. Good journalism appeals to ALL the senses! OK, well, maybe the smells of the locker room we can do without, but other than that … !
This is amazing. As a player on the Unis Volleyball team in 2014 everything your interviewers said i agree with. I like how you added some people who didn’t make second cuts and how they voiced their opinions. As one of your interviewers said about how nerve wrecking it is when playing against really good teams because i agree completely. Good job.
Very good! I love how you explained in such good detail without sounding boring! Also, how you used both sides, someone who had made team and someone who hadn’t. Excellent. (:
well good the girls try hard to make the team and they try harder to bring home the trophy and they work hard for it. the girls deserve it not only the boy deserve to get the trophy and the glory. the girls deserve the glory too.
I like this article because I can relate to it and I know how it is to be on the volleyball team. I also like how both, girls who made the team and girls who didn’t, stay positive throughout all of this. Volleyball is a fun sport but it can also get very nerve-wrecking being put under all the pressure.
