I am very pleased to announce that our Howard students raised an outstanding amount of $6316.60 this year! This is the highest amount that Howard has ever raised! This was also the 26th highest amount raised out of all of the schools that participated in Kids Heart Challenge Program in Michigan! The money our students raised will go to the American Heart Association to help fund research to fight heart disease and stroke. I would like to thank everyone that donated this year!!

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
I am pleased to announce that we wrapped up chess club after a very successful season!! I am so proud of each of the students on the team and their commitment that helped our A team to achieve second place at the district championship this season. At the same tournament, our B team was able to achieve first place. Way to go, Howard! Chess club will finish the season with a pizza party to celebrate our season on Friday, June 7th from 3:35 to 4:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. During the pizza party, the students will play chess games and I will hand out awards. Parents will need to arrange to have their child picked up as soon as the party is finished at door #10 in the back of the school by the cafeteria.

I will plan to assess all of my classes this week during stations. The Kindergarten-2nd grade classes will be assessed on the skip and the overhand throw. The skip will be their locomotor grade on the report card and the overhand throw will be their object control grade on their report card. The 3rd grade classes will be assessed on catching a fly ball, the 4th grade classes will be assessed on the overhand throw, and the 5th grade classes will be assessed on batting. These skills will be their object control grades on their report cards. If I am not able to assess classes, because of 5th grade camp or from having friday off of school, I will asses them next week. If i see a 3rd-5th grade class twice this week, I will have them play a softball game outside or inside, depending on the weather.
This week, I will have all of my classes kindergarten-5th learn and practice throwing, catching, and batting. I will have each grade level practice the skills in ways that will be appropriate for their ability level. To practice batting, all of the classes will start by hitting the ball off of a tee, using developmentally appropriate steps for the skill. My 3rd-5th grade classes will play 3-4 person lead-up game during their second class of the week.
This week, I will be focusing on teaching all of the 1st-5th grade classes how to play kickball. I will have all of them play games during class. We will be having a teachers vs. students game next Friday, May 17th. The April students of the month from each class 1st-5th grade will be playing the teachers. This is the PBIS reward for this month. The other students will get to watch, if they met the reward criteria for this month.
My kindergarten students will learn and practice the overhand throw this week. They will practice it in a variety of ways during class.
This is my Kids Heart Challenge week! All of my K-5th grade classes will be performing a variety of jump roping stations during their individual class/classes this week. My kindergarten classes are not participating in the Kids Heart Challenge program, but they will still perform the jump roping stations this week. This is the last week of jump roping for my classes, but the donations are not due until Friday, May 10th. The Kids Heart Challenge website will also stop accepting new students that day.
All of the kindergarten-5th grade classes will be practicing jump roping for the next two weeks. I will have them learn and practice a variety of types of jump roping and skills. Some of the types of jump roping will be; shot, long, chinese, jump sticks, hoop jumpers, hula hoops, and skip it’s. I will then have all of the classes practice jump roping during my Kids Heart Challenge Stations next week. The kindergarten students will practice jump roping during class, however, they will not participate in the Kids Heart Challenge Program until 1st grade. The final day to turn in donations for the Kids Heart Challenge Program will be Friday, May 10th.
My 3rd-5th grade classes will not practice jump roping during their second class of the week. The 4th and 5th grade classes will be assessed on the curl-up test and then will play a throwing game for the rest of the class. The 3rd grade classes will practice fitness tests and play a throwing game during their second class of the week.
This week, my 3rd-5th grade classes will learn and practice badminton. I fee this is a great way for my students to be able to practice the forehand and backhand skills without needing to chase a tennis ball all over the gym. My kindergarten-2nd grade classes will all start my jump rope unit this week. I will also have a Kids Heart Challenge (Jump Rope) assembly Monday, April 15 at the end of the day. The students in 1st-5th grade will learn about the Kids Heart Challenge program and receive their donation envelope that day. The students will have until May 10th to turn in their donations.
This week, my 4th and 5th grade classes will all take my volleyball unit assessment during their first class of the week. I will have them take it on the chromebooks in the gym. The students have been reviewing the last few classes to prepare for the assessment. During the 4th and 5th graders second class of the week, they will start my tennis/badminton unit. This unit will last for the next three weeks. The 3rd grade classes will also start my tennis/badminton unit this week and they will also continue this unit for the next three weeks. The kindergarten-2nd grade classes will spend this week focusing on their new locomotor skill for the fourth marking period, which is skipping. I will have all of the classes practice the skill during warm-ups and games.
I will plan to have stations with all of my classes this week, so that I will be able to assess them on their locomotor skill and the object control skills for the 3rd marking period. I will have stations with all of my 3rd-5th grade classes during their first class of the week. During the second class, I will have the 3rd graders take their second 1 minute jump rope test and the 4th and 5th graders will review or take my volleyball unit assessment. This depends what lesson my 4th and 5th grade classes are on.
3rd marking period assessments
K-2nd – sliding and catching
3rd – 1 min. jump rope
4th and 5th – sit and reach and underhand strike (serve)
