Read and annotate “Are Our Phones Making Us Zombies?” then ask for the test questions.

If you already annotated the article while you were studying, PROVE IT by showing me your old article.

Answer any TWO of the test questions (1-6).  YOU MUST USE QAR.

Write one CER on loose leaf.

Read  and annotate the elephant article.

Answer #6. YOU MUST USE QAR.

Make one flash card. The word is “elephant”.

STUDY GUIDE

(Several mistakes are sprinkled around in this study guide. Catch them to earn a polar point.)

 

The study guide must be done IN ORDER.

 

Read and annotate “Our Phones Making Us Zombies?”

The article is on the printer.

 

ANNOTATIONS:

  • HIGHLIGHT:
    • “distracted, tired, anxious, and unhappy”
    • “they have a dark side”
    • “seeing your grades fall”
    • “your brain is pulled out of it’s state of concentration”
    • “too little sleep”
    • “can be harmful when used excessively”
    • “fear of missing out”
  • Write #1 next to every highlight.
  • Write at least three connections on the side of the article while you read.
  • Write at least three tough questions on the side of the article while you read.
  • Write these summaries AFTER the correct sections:
    • ways to get no phone free time
    • phones = less sleep
    • introduction
    • young brains get more addicted
    • explains the history of the problem and how it happens
    • small section – doesn’t really match the article
    • phone distracts brain, brain doesn’t focus well
    • adults/parents are now limiting screen time
  • Circle all the bold words.

HINT: It’s OK to write a SHORT introduction to explain or define the topic before you write the claim sentence.

Write a “golden line” about yesterday’s assembly.

A golden line is ONE SENTENCE that you think was the most important part of something you read or heard.

After you write your golden line, skip a few lines and then explain (IN YOUR OWN WORDS) why you think that was the MOST important thing that the speaker said.

After you finish B-W and your HW and Cyber Monday shopping and your CER, you may choose something QUIET and EDUCATIONAL to work on.  If you’re not sure what to work on, start making flash cards (start with “cyber”).

TODAY IS CYBER MONDAY!

You have $300 available to spend.

You do NOT have to spend all the money.

You must shop for at least eleven minutes and no more than twenty-three minutes. Write your shopping start and stop time on the top of a piece of loose leaf. You must shop at two or more websites.

You MUST write notes about the items on loose leaf as you shop (evidence).

Choose ONE of the things and write a paragraph to explain why you’re thankful for that thing.

Before you try this extra credit, you must read the article and write a short summary.

With your partner or group of three, prepare a skit that shows parents and kids arguing about Screen Time. One of you must be the parent and one of you must be the child. Your skit must include MANY details from the article.
