In Language Arts today the students spent time predicting what their article of the week is going to be about. They also labeled the text features they found and used them to support their predictions.

The students also spent time reviewing and reflecting on their one-pagers. They were also given the requirements for one-pager number three. I have attached the requirements to this blog post.

Today we began working with verbs. We will continue to learn about different types of verbs throughout the course of the week.

Lastly, the students spent time at the book fair.  The book fair will remain open during conferences tonight and during school on Wednesday and Thursday. If you were not able to attend conferences yesterday, we look forward to seeing you today between 3:30 and 6:15.

Have a great evening!

In Language Arts today the students began learning about genres.  This is something we will continue to learn about this week and the beginning of next week.

The students also spent time reviewing their article of the week.  We discussed the pros and cons of self-driving cars as well as why we feel they would be beneficial or harmful.

Lastly, the students spent time playing Escape the Room.  They were given questions to help them review the three stories as well as the concepts we have been learning in Language Arts.  This will help to prepare them for their test on Friday.  To review, the students can play Escape the Room on Google Classroom at home. Additionally, the students will be working on a study guide in class tomorrow that they can use to help them study.  The following is the information that will be on the test:

  • Author’s Purpose
  • Point of View
  • Pyramid of Action
  • Types of Conflict
  • Story Vocabulary
  • “Eleven” Questions

Yesterday in Language Arts the students were taken to the library.  They were also given ten minutes in class to finalize anything they may have needed to practice for their presentation.  We also presented in class.

The students and I discussed some changes that we will be making to the way grading is done from this point forward in the school year.  The students will still be expected to read for 60 minutes at home each week.  They will still be expected to read two good fit books and complete two one-pagers by the end of the second marking.

Read Theory and Moby Max will be changing slightly.  For Read Theory, the students are still expected to complete 3 quizzes each week.  However, they now have to have a passing score.  If students do not pass the first three quizzes they take each week, they will be expected to continue taking quizzes until they can pass three. I will also no longer be looking at minutes in Moby Max as well.  Instead, lessons will be assigned in Language and students will be expected to complete all of the required lessons by the due date.  Currently, we are focusing on verbs.  The lessons assigned on verbs will be due Friday, December 1st.  The following are the lessons that have been assigned:

  1. Past, Present, and Future Verbs
  2. Past Tense of Irregular Verbs
  3. Progressive Verb Tenses
  4. Modal Helping Verbs
  5. Verb Tenses to Convey Sequence
  6. The Verb to be to Convey State

The students will still be given time each day to  work on this in class.

I hope you are enjoying the day off!

In Language Arts today the students participated in a matching activity where they were given different scenarios and they had to determine which type of conflict each scenario was.

The students were give the remainder of class to work on their POA Project.  If students did not finish during class time, it was homework.  The students will be presenting their projects on Monday.

Today was the end of the marking period.  I will have grades completely updated by the end of the day Monday.  Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Monday, November 13th and Tuesday, November 14th. More information about this will be posted on the blog as we get closer to these dates. Report cards will be distributed at conferences.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Today in Language Arts the students finished reading “Tuesdays of the Other June”. We discussed the events that took place in the story as well as the various conflicts within the text.

The students were introduced to their Pyramid of Action Project.  The requirements were given to the students in class and have also been added to this blog post. The students will be creating a pyramid of action presentation with a group of their choosing.  They will have the entire class period tomorrow to work on this and they will present on Monday.  Supplies will be provided for the students to create their presentation but if there is something specific they want to use, they were asked in class today to bring those supplies with them tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the last day of the marking period.  I will do my best to have grades updated by the end of the weekend. Anything that is not turned in by the end of class tomorrow will not be accepted on Monday.  This includes one-pagers because the students have had almost 8 week of school to complete these assignments. Report cards will be distributed at conferences on Monday, November 13th and Tuesday, November 14th.

Have a great evening!

The students also started reading “Tuesdays of the Other June” today. This is one of the longest stories that we read so they did not finish.  They will be given time in class tomorrow to finish reading.

Please remember that the end of the marking period is this Friday.  All assignments need to be turned in by 3:05 because I will be submitting grades over the weekend.

During class time the students continued to learn about the types of conflict by looking at the types of internal and external conflicts.

In Language Arts today the students began learning about conflict.  We discussed that conflicts are internal and external.  Then, we spent time comparing and contrasting the meaning of the two.

The students also spent time reading their article of the week and identifying the claim(s) the author makes. If the students did not finish this in class, it is to be done tonight as homework.

Grades are updated with the exception of the CER response for the article of the week about the Earth’s atmosphere.  I will have this done by the end of the day Tuesday at the latest.

Retakes for the Unit One Vocabulary/Grammar Test are being offered Tuesday, October 31st after school or Wednesday, November 1st before school at 7:15. Students must be signed up in advance in order to attend the retake.  Students must also have a signed ticket that shows their families are aware of the score on their test as well as the scheduled retake.  Any student who has missing work is ineligible for a retake.

Many students are ready to turn in their one-pagers.  I have attached the rubrics for each one to this blog post for your convenience.
