Second graders study rural and urban communities in their social studies class, so we used that prior knowledge to continue looking at how an artist uses space in their artwork. We looked at and identified foreground (things that are near), middle ground (things in between near and far) and background (things that are far away) in the paintings of Grant Wood. Specifically, we looked at his rural landscapes on the promethean board and the students labeled the paintings with sticky notes using the appropriate vocabulary. They really enjoyed showing what they knew by engaging with the technology.
