HONORS Poetry Project
Please open, read, and print the correct document below, according to your class hour. Each class has a different time period, so make sure you a re reading the correct one. You MUST sign up for a poem in my class by Friday, May 20th.
EXTRA CREDIT for Ballad
Write out the first stanza of a modern (1980’s and up) TV show theme song. Add the rhyme scheme and write down if it fits the traditional or contemporary definition of a ballad. Use your notes to determine the answer 🙂

Read “Right Hand” on pg. 954 and do the following to practice skills/concepts:
Poem Analysis Practice
Directions: Write all your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Provide clear text evidence where needed.
- How many stanzas?
- Using your notes, write the name of each type of stanza form used in the poem.
- What type of verse form is this poem? How do you know?
- Find an example of each type of figurative language below and copy the line: a. simile- b. metaphor-c. personification-
- Write a line or phrase (and underline the sound) that has: a . Alliteration- b. Consonance- c. Assonance-
- What is the MOOD of this poem? Supply words/phrases as back up of your opinion.
- Who is the SPEAKER in this poem? Provide support for your decision.
- Determine a THEME/MESSAGE for this poem and provide support for your inference.

Read “Reapers” on pg. 941 and the following analysis to practice skills/concepts learned this far:
Directions: Copy the poem neatly; skip lines.
- Write the rhyme scheme.
- What is the stanza form? How do you know?
- Find two examples of alliteration; highlight or underline the sounds.
- Find two examples of consonance; highlight or underline the sounds.
- Explain how the poet creates onomatopoeia in the poem.
- Who or what is the speaker? Provide support.
Poetry Homework Due: Tuesday
The poem, “The Kraken” by Lord Tennyson can be found in your textbook on pg. 939. The analysis questions are on the attached page if you didn’t pick one up in class.

Poetry Homework Due: Thurs.
Read “The Wind. . . ” by Emily Dickinson on p.950 (or look for it online if you forgot your book). Do questions #2, 3, 4 on the bottom of the page.
- Interpret: Identify the speaker of the poem and infer some traits. Support your answer with text evidence.
2. Interpret: Who is the “guest” in the poem? What does it do as it moves through the house?
3. Interpret: What words and phrases show the guest to be fleeting or fragile? Hypothesize: Does the speaker of the poem see the guest as menacing or kind? Support your answer with text evidence.
4. Recall: What two actions does the speaker try to complete? Infer: What does this suggest about the speaker?
5. Recall/Demonstrate understanding of poetic form/structure: What kind of poem is this? How many stanzas? Infer: Why are some of the lines inverted in a non-grammatical fashion? Support your answer.
