Weather Guidelines

Dear Parent & Guardians,

Now that cold weather is here, it’s important for students to dress appropriately for the conditions. Students need to wear a winter jacket to school and also bring a hat and gloves when the temperature hits a certain number.  When snow is on the ground, students need to bring boots and snow pants. If the temperature is 20 degrees or warmer, students will still be going outside for recess. A copy of our Winter Guidelines for student dress is outlined below.

Winter Guidelines for Outdoor Recess

Students go outside for recess two times a day, even during the winter months. We use the following guidelines to determine when it is safe for students to be outside. To make this determination, we use the “feels like” temperature (wind chill) as reported by the National Weather Service. Please make sure your child is prepared with the necessary outerwear.

TEMPERATURE GUIDELINES:

  • Below 20 degrees, we do not go outside
  • 20 degrees or higher, we go outside

Clothing

During the months of November through March, students should bring boots every day as there are many areas on the playground that can get quite snowy and/or muddy. Labeling items with your child’s first and last name can help us to return any lost items. We expect that students will wear the following winter gear when heading outside for recess.

CLOTHING RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • 50-60 degrees: Long sleeves
  • 40-50 degrees: Jacket,sweatshirt, or coat
  • 30-40 degrees: Winter jacket, hat and mittens/gloves and covered legs (i.e tights, jeans, pants).
  • Below 30 and if snowy: Full set of snow gear to play in the snow (winter jacket, snow pants, hat, mittens, and boots)
  • November – March: Bring boots and shoes daily

Students who do not wear snow pants and boots will not be able to play in the snow or on the playground.

Students who do not bring boots will still go outdoors, but are expected to stay on the sidewalk.

Thank you for helping to make sure your student is prepared for the Michigan Fall & Winter!

Mrs. Alcodray & Mrs. Fournier

Parent Teacher Conferences

Fall conferences are scheduled for November 12th & 14th. Each family needs to sign up for one time slot. We ask that you please come without your child so that we can discuss successes and concerns during this short time period. If you need translation please let me know ahead of time so I can arrange a staff member to be there. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!!

Weekly update: Sept. 30 – Oct. 4

Good afternoon,

Happy almost October! This week:

  • In October we start reading logs. Going home today is the October Reading log. The expectation is that students should be reading for 20 minutes at home everyday (or at least most days). They color a pumpkin for each day they read 20 minutes, then on the back they fill in the date, title, and how the book was read. Please keep it in a safe place at home, it is due November 1st.
  • In October we also start Weekly Writing homework. Going home at the beginning of each month is their weekly writing topics. Each week the student chooses one topic from the list and writes about it on a separate sheet of paper or notebook. They must follow the guidelines at the bottom of the page. Weekly Writing is due every Friday. The writing should be done by the student with minimal help from adults. Please have your child try their best to spell the words. I do not expect every word to be spelled correctly. Students will never learn to spell if we spell words for them. This is excellent practice since writing is a challenge for most.
  • There is no school tomorrow (Tuesday) for students!
  • This week in math we will complete module 1 lessons 20-23.
  • Thanks to those of you that have ordered Scholastic books. Keep those orders coming!
  • Please join us for the October PTA Meeting this Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6:00 pm. The meeting will take place on Zoom. Use the link below to Join the Zoom Meeting https://us05web.zoom.us/j/81347641325?pwd=0sbKMVOTGTmTUT6SMr7EkZtjGjhraJ.1 Meeting ID: 813 4764 1325 Passcode: 0Qzb2m
  • Phonics books and fluency homework also go home today. These should be practiced daily at home. The books stay home and are for your child to keep and practice. Fluency homework is due on Friday.

Enjoy your week!!
