Weekly Update: Sept. 23- 27

Good afternoon,

Happy Fall! I hope everyone had a great weekend. This week:

  • Today we started unit 1 in our ELA Benchmark curriculum. Each unit is three weeks long. At the end of each unit students will bring home their completed magazine booklet. Each week your child will get new spelling and sight words to learn and practice. Their first list (short a) came home on Friday. They will be tested on the spelling words and sight words this Friday (13 words total). We practice them in school but students should practice them at home as well. I also list the words each week on the blog up at the top under the spelling words tab in case you ever misplace the paper copy. There is also a tab at the top that says spelling and sight word activities. You can click on that tab for some fun activities to try at home for practicing their words.
  • In addition to practicing their spelling and sight words each day at home, students will be coming home with two new phonics books every Monday. These books go with our spelling pattern for the week. We read and practice them in class then students take them home to read. These books should be kept in a safe place at home and students should take a few minutes each day to read them. This helps to build fluency and practice the weekly spelling pattern. These books are theirs to keep. Also going home every Monday for homework is a fluency worksheet. Students should read the passage three times a day and parents sign it at the bottom. They should also find and highlight the words from the box in the passage. These passages are due every Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions about spelling or homework.
  • Tomorrow is early release, dismissal is at 1:50.
  • This week in math we will be completing module 1 lessons 15-17, quiz, then lessons 18-19. So by the end of this week you should not be farther than lesson 19 in your math Apply homework book.
  • Please join us for a casual meet and greet with Amal Alcodray, Director of the Heights Campus on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 in the MBCC Lecture Hall at 8:45am. We are looking forward to seeing you!
  • There is no school for students next Tuesday, October 1st for teacher professional development.

Have a great week!!

Weekly Update: Sept. 3 – 6

Good afternoon,

I hope everyone enjoyed the long holiday weekend. At the beginning of every week I will post important info for the week. Here is what is happening this week:

  • Thanks again for all the school supplies, paperwok, and family pictures. Keep them coming if you haven’t turned them in yet.
  • Today is our first early release Tuesday, dismissal is at 1:50 for all students.
  • Today we start our math curriculum, Eureka Math2. One of the components of this program is the Apply math homework book. Apply gives students more practice with the concepts learned in class each day. Each lesson in the Apply book corresponds to the same lesson we completed in class. This week in math we will be completing lessons 1-4. The Apply books are being sent home today. These books are to be kept in a safe place at home and used in conjunction with the lessons we complete in class. I do not expect students to complete every lesson in the Apply book. The goal would be to complete at least a few lessons in it each week as review and practice of what we learn in class. These books are to stay at home and will not be collected or graded, they are meant for extra practice. However, anyone that completes the entire book by the end of the module may turn in their book for a prize. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions.
  • Remember to bring in a water bottle and a healthy snack everyday.
  • The first PTA meeting of the school year is this Thursday the 5th at 2pm in the cafeteria. Going home today is more info about the PTA. Please join to help our school!!

Have a wonderful short week!!

We made it!!!!

We had a fun and busy week in 1st grade! It’s been great getting to know your child and everyone is doing fantastic so far. Just a few things:

  • Thanks for all the classroom school supplies, we appreciate it!
  • Thanks for completing all the beginning of the school year paperwork. If you haven’t yet please do so and send them in your child’s red folder next week.
  • Don’t forget to bring in a family picture to share with the class.
  • There is no school Friday-Monday for Labor Day. School resumes Tuesday, September 3rd.
  • Tuesday is our first early release of the school year. Early release days are every Tuesday. Dismissal times for early release days are 1:50pm.
  • I typically post at the beginning of each week so look for another blog post on Tuesday.

Have a wonderful long weekend. See you Tuesday!😊

Welcome back!!!

Hello!

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. It was so nice seeing many of you Friday for Open House! Please read the following carefully and let me know if you have any questions.

You may begin dropping off at 8am for breakfast everyday. Please drop your child off at Door 18 with the covered walkway. They walk down the corridor and a staff member will be at the door to open it for them. The students will have breakfast until 8:20 and then be dismissed to their classroom. Any student dropped off after 8:20 am will need to go to the playground doors and be buzzed in by the office. No parents are allowed to enter the building. Once the door unlocks your child may come in the doors and staff members will be present to help them find our classroom if they do not already know.

1st grade dismisses from Door 18 again, just like in kindergarten. Kindergarten will dismiss a few minutes early since they take a little longer. We will be out between 11:25-11:30am on Monday. Please pull all the way up so all cars can fit in the parking lot. No Montessori parents should park in the parking spots…. Those are reserved for Developmental preschool who arrives and dismisses after the Montessori. Once our class comes outside your child will fist bump me and let me know that they see Mom, Dad, etc. Then you are free to leave. Reminder to just be patient. It takes a couple of days to figure out arrival and dismissal for our new parents. It will get faster the more we practice it. If there is not room in the parking lot please do not stop on Ann Arbor Trail. You can loop around the block or park across the street at the Mosque until more space opens in the parking lot. We stay with the kids until 5 minutes after dismissal time. After that we escort them to the office and call.

****If your child has an older sibling in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. They will be picked up by their older sibling and dismissed outside of Door 20 (by the STEM doors.) Once you pull into the other parking lot security guards will be present to guide you down the sidewalk. You will pull as far forward as possible and line up that way. Once the siblings come out they will come to your car.

Please make sure that you are subscribed to the Howe School blog as well (you can sign up by entering your email on the Howe school website). That has a post with maps and more details about arrival and dismissal.

A couple of quick things:

  • Please send in a change of clothes labeled in a ziplock bag to keep in your child’s locker all year just in case.
  • If you have not sent in supplies you can do that next week also.
  • Monday is a half day dismissal is at 11:30am.
  • Tuesday is a full day, 8:25-3:20 are our new regular school hours.
  • Early release Tuesdays start Sept 3rd and dismissal is at 1:50.
  • Your child needs to bring a water bottle and healthy snack daily. I will provide them with a snack on the first day. We have early lunch this year so our snack will be in the afternoons.
  • Your child will bring home their red folder on Monday. It will have lots of important paperwork for you to read and some to be returned. Please check this folder everyday and make sure it comes back to school every morning.

I look forward to seeing all those smiling faces Monday morning! Don’t forget to go to bed early on Sunday!

As always please email me if you have any questions! My email is schneim@dearbornschools.org. I am super excited and looking forward to a GREAT year in 1st grade with all of you!😊
