Lab Activity: Reading Food Labels

On Friday, students will determine the kinds and amounts of nutrients, namely, carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids (fat) found in different types of food products.

Furthermore, students need to have completed AS THEIR HOMEWORK the four Frayer models on carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. One of the four will be randomly selected as a spot check and graded to supplement the students’ study guide on section 3.2, Biomolecules of Life.

Biomolecules of Life: Review and Reinforcement

We will answer and correct our study guide on the biomolecules of life; we will elaborate further upon that topic by completing our graphic organizer of the Frayer models on the concepts and ideas as a reinforcement.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2012: TEST ON DENSITY, SCIENTIFIC NOTATIONS, & PERCENTAGE ERROR

Students will be evaluated upon their mathematical skills in determining the density of an object as well as be able to manipulate the density equation to figure out the mass or volume of an object; be able to convert standard notations into scientific notations and vice versa; and be able to determine the percentage error that is based upon a given set of data that include experimental and accepted values!

Review Polarity Lab & Molecules of Life

We will review our results on the polarity lab, and then we will work on making a Frayer model for the first set of eight new vocabulary terms that are an integral part of the molecules of life.

Demonstrating Polarity

Students will pair up to demonstrate their understanding of how polarity occurs when organic compounds are mixed together by using cooking oil, ethanol, and tap water.

In the remaining time, we shall complete the correction of the study guide, section 3.1 on carbon compounds.

Homework: Scientific Notation

Students are to solve problem #’s: 13a  & 13c on page 42; 15a & 15c on page 43. Students will demonstrate their understanding on the Promethean board on Monday by solving and explaining their work!

Those students who want to challenge themselves can do problem #14 on page 42.
