As the moment of truth ensues, students will be evaluated upon Chapter 3, Biochemistry, in terms of the biomolecules of life, namely, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids as well as the general characteristics of carbon compounds.
Friday, October 5, 2012: Test on Chapter 3, Biochemistry
Section 3.3: Mixtures of Matter
Students are to complete the checklist on mixtures of matter as their guide on page 36 and list three facts about mixtures from their reading. Furthermore, they are to define the nine (9) terms or concepts that are listed in their science notebook to be discussed and elaborated upon in class tomorrow.
Section 3.2: Changes in Matter
Students are to complete their homework assignment on changes in matter on pages 34 and 35 in their science notebook. We will review them and reinforce them as well as do a demonstration to illustrate the law of conservation of mass.
Biochemistry: Jeopardy Game!
Now that the students have completed their jeopardy game setup, the competition will commence as each group will attempt to stump the other groups as each group will have the opportunity to earn points (one point per question) for its side.
Section 3.2: Changes in Matter
We will do a brief question and answer as a review on the properties of matter, and then the students will work in their science notebook on Section 3.2 that centers on changes in matter. We will contrast physical changes with chemical changes through their characteristics as well as give several examples that we experience throughout our daily lives.
Educational Game: Jeopardy!
Students will work in groups of four to devise five answers on each of the assigned categories on the biomolecules of life. The categories are carbon compounds, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Then a competition will commence as each group will attempt to stump the other groups as each group will have the opportunity to earn points (one point per question) for its side.
Homework: Properties & Changes
Students are to read their textbook about the properties and changes of matter in Chapter 3, Section 3.1 and answer their reading guide science notebook pages 30-32.
Homework: Chapter 3 Review
To prepare for our chapter test, students are to answer the following questions in their notebook from page 62: 2, 3, 7, 9, 15, 17, 23, 27, 28, & 29. Also answer page 63: 1-8 plus the short response.
Lab Discussion/Graphic Organizer/Brief Assessment
We will review our lab from last week on analyzing the organic compounds, namely, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids that are found in our food products. Moreover, students will formulate a concept map that is based upon these organic compounds and do a brief assessment on these biomolecules to determine how well the subject matter has been learned over the past week.
Homework: Data Analysis (Graphing)
On Monday, we will elaborate upon the two sets of data by analyzing and graphing both sets of data as well as examine a few variables that are directly linked to our scientific method approach. Furthermore, students will enhance their graphic abilities’ interpretation by analyzing and graphing another pair of sets of data as a brief assessment.
