Classwork Due by Tuesday, the 15th of January, 2013: Human Body Systems

Students will make a graphic organizer as an outline on their notebooks that is based upon several human body systems that includes the skeletal system (composition, divisions, functions, and joints), muscular system (functions, muscle types and their functions, and the two connective tissues: Tendons & ligaments), digestive system (structures and functions, and food pathway), circulatory system ( major components, blood components, and blood pathway throughout the heart), excretory system (functions and pathway of urine only), respiratory system (structures and functions, and the pathway of gaseous exchange), nervous system ( the two major systems and their divisions as well as their functions).

As students continue on with their journey through the human body systems, they will focus on the respiratory and excretory systems based upon their structures and functions throughout our class discussion.

Section 8.2: Naming and Writing Formulas for Molecular Compounds

Students will learn the process of naming and writing formulas for molecular compounds per our class discussion as they relate it to the process of naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds and recognize the several differences between the two processes.

Human Body Systems (Cont’d): The Circulatory System

Students will work on the the circulatory system as they will focus upon the major heart chambers, the key blood vessels, and blood cell types. In addition to knowing the major functions of the circulatory system, students will be expected to trace a drop of blood throughout the body such as from the right atrium to get back to the left atrium. The key components involved will be the pump itself, the heart chambers; the transport mechanism, the major blood vessels; the gaseous exhange center, the lungs; and the filtering center, the kidneys!

A Homework Reinforcement: Naming and Writing Formulas of Ionic Compounds

Students will practice further on naming and writing formulas of ionic compounds as a homework assignment. Students need to use their periodic table as well as the table on page 221 in their textbooks to aid them in this crucial process since it is a precursor for Chemistry 2, next semester!

Homework: Section 7.3 in Science Notebook Reading Guide

Students are to read Section 7.3 in their textbooks and complete pages 88 through 90 in their Science Notebook Reading Guide. We will practice further on naming and stating formulas for ionic compounds.

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 Project Due : Mitotic Cell Division

Students are to complete their project on the stages of mitosis by drawing, labeling, and explaining the cellular activities of each stage. We will also review our study guide on the cell cycle that includes the interphase stage (G1, S phase, G2), and cell division (mitosis and cytokinesis).

Cell Division: Mitosis

Students will observe, draw, and explain each of the four stages of mitosis, namely, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Furthermore, students will use the stage of the interphase as their starting point to understand the process of cell division known as mitosis, which is actually nuclear division, followed by cytokinesis or cytoplasmic division.
