WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 2013 TEST ON CHAPTER 10: DNA, RNA, AND PROTEIN SYNTHESIS

Student will be evaluated upon the discovery of the DNA molecule that was based upon the experimental works of Rosalind Franklin, Frederick Griffith, Oswald Avery, and Hershey and Chase. Furthermore, students will be evaluated upon the DNA replication process that Watson and Crick as well as Chargaff had put forth the foundational and structural characteristics of this molecule for our comprehension process. Furthermore, students will be evaluated upon the comprehensive process of protein synthesis through the transcription and translation processes.

MONDAY, MARCH 25TH, 2013: DNA PROJECT PRESENTATION

Each student is expected to have completed the DNA project and is prepared to present it in front of the class. This assignment was given ten days ago with adequate time to complete the work as we have practiced and learned further about the DNA molecule, its characteristics, and the process of protein synthesis that is directly related to the genes that make up the DNA molecule.

TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 2013 TEST: PERCENT COMPOSITION AND MOLECULAR FORMULA

Since Monday, the 25th of March, will be a review day, students are to bring any pertinent questions to class for clarification as we will be having a test on Tuesday on determining percent composition of elements in a compound, empirical formula of a compound as well as molecular formula of a compound.

Determining the Molecular Formula of a Compound

We will further continue our discussion of the empirical formula by using such a formula to determine the molecular formula of a compound as the experimental molar mass value of the compound is compared to the mass value of the empirical formula of the same compound, and the result is a multiplier, and this multiplier is used to multiply the number of each atom/element in the empirical formula to determine the molecular formula.

Simulate Protein Synthesis Process

Students will work in groups of three to simulate the process of making proteins as they will use colored paper clips to represent their nitrogenous bases (as each is a component of a nucleotide) to demonstrate their understanding of the transcription and translation processes that produce the protein molecule.

Empirical Formula

Students are to practice upon determining the empirical formula of various chemical compounds as further reinforcement of said topic. They are to practice on problems #’s 161, 164, and 167 on pages 360-361.

Homework: Determine the Empirical Formula

Students are to complete any remaining problems on page 344, # 54-57. Furthermore students are to do #161 on page 360, and #172 and #173 on page 361.

Protein Synthesis & Brief Assessment

Students will work further on the protein synthesis process through assembling and analyzing data for making proteins, as well as reinforce DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis through a brief formative assessment.

TEST ON FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2013: MAKING PROTEINS

Students will be evaluated upon the process of protein synthesis, whereby they will be given four different situations based upon given data, and they have to analyze the data to be able to synthesize four different proteins by determining the transcriptive information from the DNA molecule for each protein molecule as this data get translated on the ribosomes to produce each protein molecule.

Section 10.4: Percent Composition and Empirical Formula

Students will learn how to determine the percent composition of an element in a compound from a given set of data so that we can segue into our discussion and determination of an empirical formula for a compound through a given analysis of the percentages of that compound.
