THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2013: CHAPTER 15 TEST

Students will be evaluated upon Chapter 15 in terms of the several scientific contributions that were put forth by several evolutionary scientists that focus upon the evidence of evolution as well as evolution in action supported by several well-known and documented instances or examples!

Homework: Chapter 15 Review (Due Wednesday, May 15, 2013)

Students are to reinforce Chapter 15, Theory of Evolution, by answering on their notebooks the following questions: #’s 2, 4-16 on page 312 and 1-6 plus the short response on page 313.

Section 14.2 Cont’d: Molarity (Moles of Solute/Liters of Solution)

Students who are still in need of further practice upon the percent by mass and the percent by volume are to do problem #’s: 1, 2, 3, & 4 on page 985.

On Tuesday, we will review our lab activity from last Friday on factors that affect the rate of solution, and we will discuss the concept of “Molarity” and reinforce it through quantitative analysis on page 482-486.

Reinforcement: Evolution in Action

We will reinforce the process of evolution in action that was based upon our class discussion on Friday as we will compare and contrast convergent and divergent evolutionary processes and provide examples upon each. Moreover, we will elaborate upon artificial selection as compared to natural selection. Furthermore, we will realize that many species are capable of coevolving within the same environment over time such as bacteria and the antibiotic that the bacteria can resist and change through mutation over time.

Homework Correction: Lab Activity & Percent by Mass

On Monday, we will answer and correct our lab activity on the factors that affect the rate of solution, and then we will solve the assigned problems on percent by mass from Thursday’s homework.

Section 15.3: Evolution in Action

Students are to complete their personal Think Aloud assignment at home, and be prepared to team up with their perspective groups to  Think Aloud about what they have synthesized from the section on Evolution in Action. This will be done in terms of their critical thinking skills and report out to the rest of the class when each is called upon to share out. Then we will commence our class discussion of said topic in terms of PowerPoint notes.

Homework: Solution Concentration, Percent by Mass

Students are to solve problems on page 481, #’s: 9-12 that are based upon our class discussion of percent by mass.

On Friday, we will be doing the lab, Factors Affecting the Rate of Solution. Students will be working in groups of three to facilitate the cooperative learning process in the laboratory-as usual!

Section 15.3: Evolution in Action (Think-Pair-Share/Think Aloud)

Students will be allowed 15-20 minutes to complete their study guide on evidence of evolution. Then each pair/group of students will take part in the Think Aloud activity that centers upon Evolution in Action as each student will be evaluated upon his/her ability to apply this strategy effectively.

Section 14.2: Solution Concentration

We will review and correct our study guide on types of mixtures, and then we will commence our quantitative analytical study of solution concentration that is based upon the percent by mass, percent by volume, molarity, and molality.

Evidence of Evolution

We will complete our discussion of the evidence of evolution through the several inferences of fossil distibutions that have been put forth by scientists as we will expand and elaborate upon them, and we realize that biogeography enhances our understanding of species distribution. Furthermore, we will comment and study how anatomical structures have evolved over time that represent a common ancestry among many living and nonliving organisms.
