Homework, Section 18.1 Reading Guide: Arrhenius & Bronsted-Lowry Models

Students are to complete their reading guide on acids and bases that focuses on the Arrhenius model and the Bronsted model on pages 247-248. In the remaining time, we will briefly discuss, elaborate, compare and contrast the concepts of pH and pOH.

Acids and Bases!

We will answer and correct our study guide on colligative properties and then proceed with our discussion on acids and bases along with their chemical properties. We will also examine two models on said topic: Arrhenius model and Bronsted-Lowry model. Students will understand the philosophy of acids and bases through these models as the students will be able to distinguish between a conjugated acid or a conjugated base.

Reinforcement on Section 18.3: Energy Transfer

Students will reinforce the class discussion on energy transfer by completing their study guide on said topic as well as the critical thinking questions on page 369 (#’s 7, 8, & 9) and turn them in. In the remaining time, the students are to answer the five objectives of Section 18.4: Ecosystem Recycling on their notebooks as a question and answer.

Section 4.4: Colligative Properties of Solutions

Students are to complete and turn in their packet of Chapter 14 that focuses on mixtures and solutions as they will elaborate upon the colligative properties of solutions that include vapor pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic pressure.

FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2013 CHAPTER 18 TEST: INTRODUCTION TO ECOLOGY

Students will be evaluated upon the ecological processes that focus upon the interactions between the living and nonliving things with emphasis upon the transfer of energy among organisms as well as elaborate upon the significant roles that the biogeochemical cycles play in our daily lives as they influence all the variables on Earth.

Section 14.3: Solvation and Solubility

We will complete answering and correcting our reading guide on solvation and solubility and reinforce this topic by a study guide that focuses on the same, but it does entail several short answer questions about the characteristics of solutions such as heat of solution, factors that affect solubility, as well as Henry’s law.

Section 14.3: Factors Affecting Solvation

We will continue our discussion of the factors affecting the solvation process and complete our reading guide of said material. Furthermore, we will reinforce these factors of solvation by elaborating upon the characteristics of solutions as well as the solvation process in aqueous solutions.

Homework: Section 18.2; Discussion, Section 18.3: Energy Transfer

We will answer and correct our study guide on Section 18.2, Ecology of Organisms, and then we will continue our ecological discussion that centers upon how energy is transferred among the living and nonliving components of the environment. We will emphasize the concepts of food chain and food web as we distinguish between them since they related to one another, and elaborate upon the role of the decomposers in the environment, i.e., niche, and examine why there are a few trophic levels in a typical ecosystem.

Section 18.2: Ecology of Organisms

We will review Section 18.1 study guide, Introduction to ecology. Then we will commence our discussion with the comparison of abiotic factors with those biotic factors and provide several examples upon each. Moreover, we will identify and describe two mechanisms that allow organisms to survive in a changing environment. Furthermore, we will elaborate upon the concept of the niche as it applies to different organisms in their environment.

Word Wall: Ecology

We will work on our new set of word wall that centers on the process of ecology and the several concepts and ideas that it entails and expected to be learned over the next several class days.
