TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2015 CHAPTER 1 TEST: THE MINERALS OF EARTH’S CRUST!

As was mentioned previously in class, we will be having our Chapter 1 test next week, ON TUESDAY. Therefore, in order for the students to be successful on this test, the teacher recommends that the students study their class notes since they play a crucial role in the understanding process of the material. Moreover, students are to review their double journal entries for the main ideas and figures’ analyses with their commentaries. Furthermore, students need also to review the set of questions, 1-17, at the end of Chapter 1.

Students will be given a study guide as a reference source to test themselves at home to determine how well they know the material since these questions encompass much of what has been discussed and reinforced for the past two weeks.

Directly to the right of the screen, the students can see the link for their textbook’s website (Inside the Restless Earth) with the username (svikings3) and the password (v4f5).

Mini-Project: A Mineral PowerPoint

Students will have an opportunity to create a PowerPoint in class on an assigned mineral or rock that will encompass the key characteristics of identifying minerals that include, color, luster, streak, cleavage/fracture, hardness, density, specific gravity, reaction in acid/base, application, and classification (igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic).

Identifying Minerals

Students are advised to study their class notes on the characteristics that are needed to identify minerals such as hardness, streak, luster, cleavage/fracture, density/specific gravity, and possibly color among other special properties that include fluorescence, chemical reaction, magnetism and few others.

Mineral Structure & M & M’s Lab Report

Students need to study their class notes on the structure of minerals and review their double journal entries that we discussed today, Friday, in class to be better prepared for the test on the material in the future.

REMINDER: IF YOU HAVE FAILED TO TURN IN YOUR M & M’s LAB REPORT ON ITS SCHEDULED DATE, IT IS NOT TOO LATE SINCE PARTIAL CREDIT IS MUCH BETTER THAN A ZERO OR NO CREDIT. THINK ABOUT IT!

HOURS 1, 3, & 5 Practice: The Metric System

Students are to review and practice on the metric system in terms of our class work on distance (length), mass, and volume. All necessary units have been discussed and reinforced. Students need to practice on converting from one unit of measurement to another as their bellwork will reflect such action tomorrow.

HOMEWORK HOURS 1, 3, & 5 DUE THURSDAY, OCTOBER 01, 2015: SCIENTIFIC METHOD: M & M’s ACTIVITY

Students will carry out the scientific method through an m & m’s activity, whereby, they will collect the data, analyze it, and draw a conclusion based upon their hypothesis. Note that this is a summative evaluation, rather than a regular test, as we wrap up our study of the scientific method.

ATTENTION 4TH HOUR STUDENTS: Since we are behind schedule, this activity will be due on Monday, October 5th, 2015 as we will discuss it this week, and you will have the weekend to complete it and turn it in on time.

Explanation of the Scientific Method

Students are HIGHLY ADVISED to study their class notes on the scientific method. They need to understand that it consists of several steps that depend on one another for an expected outcome. Several concepts were elaborated upon and that includes purpose, hypothesis, procedure, data, quantitative, qualitative, analysis, conclusion, independent (manipulated) variable, dependent (responding)variable, controlled experiment, and peer review.

Note: Students DO remember that we will continue with our bellwork whenever new material is acquired. Furthermore, we will be tested upon the scientific method late next week (Oct.1-3, 2015).

PAST DUE NOTICE: VIRTUAL DENSITY LAB HOURS 1, 3, & 5

Students that have not turned in their virtual lab on Density when it was due today, Monday September 21, 2015, may still turn it in for partial credit which is far better than earning a zero on this summative assignment.

TEST WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2015: DETERMINING MASS, VOLUME & DENSITY

Students will be evaluated upon the process of determining the mass, the volume, and the density based on a given set of data through a problem-solving situations.

It is highly recommended that the students study their class notes and practice upon the examples or problems that were given as a practice in class for the past several sessions.

Problem-Solving: Calculating Density

Students need to review their notes on practicing calculating density in terms of finding the volume of a regular or an irregular object along with the given mass of that object.

On Monday, we will review or learn how to manipulate the equation D= M/V to determine the mass or the volume of an object through the application of this equation.
