Students will learn the steps of the scientific method and the significance of these steps in terms of how each step is dependent on the following step to achieve the desirable outcome in a scientific investigation over time. Students will learn many key concepts in this process including, but not limited to, hypothesis, constant variable, controlled variable, dependent variable, independent variable, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis among others.
Reminder: Virtual Density Lab Due Monday, September 19, 2016
Students: I have already received a few assignments on the Virtual Density Lab that were well-done. Do not procrastinate your work until the last minute on Sunday night. Get to it by Friday or Saturday!
Argumentative Analysis (Density)
Students will complete the attached chart based on density by answering the scientific question through the principles of argumentative analysis, namely, claim, evidence, and reasoning.

Density: Solving Problems
Students will reinforce how to calculate the three different variables, namely, mass, volume, and density using the equation D = M/V.
Furthermore students need to go online and complete the activity on density on a separate sheet of paper by using the following website (Copy & paste in the web address bar):
https://ippex.pppl.gov/interactive/DensityLab_modFP_final_2.swf
NOTE: Read the directions on the bottom of the screen as well as the information box. USE ONLY THE WATER FOR LIQUID CHOICE, AND IGNORE THE OTHERS FIVE CHOICES.
College Fair Is Coming: September 20, 2016
Matter: Mass & Volume
Today, we learned about mass and volume and how to measure each. Students practiced on measuring the volume of regular and irregular objects and expected to complete the task tomorrow on five (5) different objects.
Tomorrow, we will learn about density and how do we calculate it based on the mass and volume of an object. If time permits, we will learn how to manipulate the equation for density.
NWEA: CONCEPTS AND IDEAS TO KNOW!
Please take a few minute and feel free to print and learn the attached concepts and ideas that we shall come across as we learn and reinforce the Earth Science material in class this school year.
Summer Reading & Fun Activities!
Per O.L. Smith Middle School Administration, please open and read the following two attachments that have to do with accessibility to reading material and other fun things to do this summer.
Astronomy Project: Due Date: Friday, June 10, 2016
Students will have an opportunity to put into effect a PowerPoint project to reflect some of the key ideas and concepts that focus on the sun, the moon, the earth and the seasons, as well as the scientists who have made important contributions to our study of astronomy over time.
Students: Use the two-page attachment below for your PowerPoint project!
