Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

TEST: MONDAY, NOV. 07, 2016: CHAPTER 4, SECTIONS 1 AND 2

Students will be evaluated upon the first two sections of Chapter 4, namely, Inside the Earth and Restless Continents. The test will focus upon the composition and physical properties of the layers of the Earth, how scientists know about the interior structure of the Earth, description of a tectonic plate, the idea of continental drift by Alfred Wegener, sea-floor spreading that contributes to the increasing size of the crust as the new oceanic lithosphere forms at the mid-ocean ridges while the continents continue to move farther apart from each other very slowly, as well as the magnetic reversal that reveals the evidence for the sea-floor spreading over time.

What to study? What to study? What to study?

As has become a standard for this class, the classroom teacher highly recommends that the students re-read both sections, study their Cornell notes, lecture notes, the project that was done on the Earth’s physical layers (If you do not have your project because it has been displayed to show other people your work, then you need to review pages 98-99), review your quick write if you had earned a 4 or a 5, both section review questions, and any posted material on the iblog or handouts on these topics.

Mini-Project: Broken Plates

Students will display their comprehension geographical skills by attempting to put together and label the major plates of Earth the way these plates currently exist. They will use their textbook (page 100) as a reference for this mini-project. The necessary materials will be provided, but students can bring their own coloring pencils or markers since these are not available in class.

If you were absent today, print the attachment below, work on it, and bring it in by November 4, 2016. Otherwise, it will be considered late. If you are out for an extended period of time, then bring it in upon your return to school.

Project: Simulating the Earth Layers

On Monday, students will have an opportunity to embark upon simulating the creation of our Earth’s layers as the students will construct and explain the physical layers of Earth in terms of its lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core.

1) Students will use different construction color paper for each layer.

2) Students can use plates and cups to measure and cut out different diameter for each layer.

3) Students will label each layer and write on each layer 3-4 facts to explain it.

4) Students will glue down all five physical layers.

The classroom teacher shall provide the necessary essentials for the disciples as they are asked to bring in any coloring pencils or markers at their disposal. Furthermore, students are advised to study ALL their lecture notes and Cornell notes to become very familiar with them in order to work effectively on this project.

On a lighter note, for those of you who maybe fretting over our latest evaluation venture on the mineral and rock study, rest assured that the classroom teacher has decided to use it as a learning tool for the students who like to challenge themselves as this assignment has NOT been counted against students’ grade but serve as a means of preparation for students’ education as they move forward. However, note that it’s been determined that if a student has attained an “A” or a “B” on this evaluation, that individual will be granted five (5) or four (4) EXTRA SUMMATIVE POINTS respectively.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2016: SUMMATIVE QUIZ ON MINERAL/ROCK STUDY

Students will be given a quick quiz on mineral/rock identification based on the following minerals and rocks that we have been studying for the past several weeks. Students are advised to view Google images as a refresher to be better prepared for this Friday’s quiz. Note that I have highlighted the names of minerals as compared to the rocks. Also note that Gypsum has been classified as either a mineral or as a rock according to research.

TEST: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2016: CHAPTER 2 ROCKS: MINERAL MIXTURES

Students will be evaluated upon Chapter 2 Rocks (mineral mixtures) this Thursday. Students are highly advised to study their lectures notes along with their created Cornell notes on the subject matter. Moreover, students are directed to study all section review questions in the chapter since these questions will reflect how well prepared the students are for the test on Thursday. Furthermore, Look over your flow chart of the rock cycle that was done in class and be familiar with all the processes that are involved in rock formation over time.

Notes: Igneous, Sedimentary, & Metamorphic

Students are study their class notes as well as work on their Cornell notes on the three different types of rocks that we have been working with in class. Furthermore, students are to complete their Frayer models on the selected terms, concepts, or ideas that were assigned earlier in the week as they will be verified in class for a grade on Tuesday, the 25th of October.

For your planning purposes we will be having a test on Chapter 2 in the coming week, probably Thursday or Friday, exact day to be announced on Tuesday!

Reminder: Frayer Models Due Tuesday the 25th of October 2016

Students: Make sure that you have completed the Frayer models on the fifteen (15) terms/concepts/ideas on rocks (mineral mixtures) by Tuesday. You will be graded for your accuracy on the characteristics and example(s) of each vocabulary.
