Unit 8.1, Lesson 2: Test Retake

Attention Selected Students: Any student who earned less than seventy percentile (70%) on our recent test, qualifies for a test retake on Friday, November 08, 2019. If you are one of those students and you want to retake the test, please see your classroom teacher to sign up for Friday after school for your test retake, no later than Wednesday afternoon. This will be the only time and date available for the test retake. Therefore, you need to plan accordingly, as you have a week to make the necessary arrangements.

Note that even though Marking Period 1 is over, your original score can be revised if you do well, since the year-end grade will be determined based on the AVERAGE of all four marking periods, with ONLY ONE letter grade (A, B, C, D, or E) will be sent to your future high school.

TEST: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2019: UNIT 8.1, LESSON 2: MUTANTS

Students: By this coming Monday, we will have completed the final section of lesson 2 in the Mutants lesson. Therefore, we will be having a test on Lesson 2 this coming Tuesday. Make sure that you review your notes for Lesson 2 this coming weekend, since the test will include short answers and some vocabulary fill in the blank.

Avoid emailing your classroom teacher to discuss the test questions format. If you have any questions regarding the test, write them down to have them answered on Monday only, including number of questions and how many points the test is worth, etc.

Remember that if you decided to play hooky (be absent on test day) next Tuesday, your make up test of a different format will be on Friday, November 08, 2019, AFTER THE MARKING PERIOD HAS ENDED, AND YOU HAVE A TEMPORARY ZERO, SINCE THE CLASSROOM TEACHER HAS TO SUBMIT GRADES FOR THE FIRST MARKING PERIOD AND ALL SCORES HAVE TO BE ACCOUNTED FOR!

Homework: Summary of Article, “It’s in Their Genes.”

Student Reminder: You are expected to summarize in 4 to 5 sentences the article that we read in class today. You will be called upon RANDOMLY to share out your summary. If you fail to have it done, it will cost you participation points at the end of the marking period, which counts part of your formative grade. The number of points for participation varies from marking period to marking period, because it is part of the formative grade, anywhere from 1 point to 10 points.

Students will be evaluated upon their daily bellwork by using their individual notebooks to answer a set of ten (10) questions, based on their daily work when they have entered the classroom everyday.

This evaluation will reflect those individuals who are on-task everyday versus those will dilly-dally (waste their time) and avoid carrying out their responsibilities.

A Simulation: Making and Testing a Protein Molecule

Students will simulate a protein construction through the use of office supplies, namely, by using different sizes of paper clips and binder clips.

They will also determine the length that their simulated protein can extend through the simulated tiny opening of the cell membrane (paper plate) to reflect the smoothness of “one’s skin”.

Furthermore, they will determine the strength of their simulated protein by using a spring scale to try to pull it apart to see the amount of grams that would be needed, as this will reflect the toughness of the skin: The greater the amount, the stronger/tougher is the skin.
