Lab Research Updated: Mineral Property Day 2 and Due Date: Friday, October 7th, 2016

Students will complete their rock and mineral work study on the selected minerals and rocks that were assigned last week.

Students will research and complete the properties of minerals known as hardness, density, special properties, and determine a few common uses of their minerals and rocks.

Once they are done, students will embark on analyzing their data in terms of their rocks’ and minerals’ similarities and differences as well as draw any pertinent conclusions based on their findings.

Furthermore, students will determine if the rock or mineral has one or more of the following six special properties:

1) Fluorescence ( How does the rock or mineral appear in such a light?)

2) Chemical reaction ( Does it react with an acid or a base?)

3) Optical properties (Does it form a double image using a piece of glass?)

4) Magnetism (Does the rock or mineral attract iron?)

5) Taste (Does it have a salty taste?)

6) Radioactivity (Does it emit radiation or be detected by a tool called Geiger counter)
