Section 5.3: Electron Configuration

We will discuss and reinforce a set of three rules that can be used to determine electron arrangement in an atom. We will examine the ground state of electron configuration in terms of the aufbau principle, Pauli exclusion principle, and the Hund’s rule. Furthermore, we will elaborate upon the electron arrangement in terms of orbital diagrams, electron configuration notation, and the noble-gas notation. Finally, we will focus our attention on the importance of the valence electrons and practice upon sketching an electron-dot structure of several atoms.
