Bellwork gave students practice using the knowledge of arithmetic and geometric sequences to find missing information.  They also applied their knowledge of a geometric series to answer a real-world problem.

Hwk #6 is due today.

The remainder of the period we began our discussion on Infinite Series; Topic 1.  Students used SAS4 questions 1-4 and some graph paper to discover what happens when the terms of a particular infinite series are summed up.

Friday, September 13, 2019

Bellwork gave students practice finding the sum of an Arithmetic Series, writing an Arithmetic Series in Sigma Notation, and finding the number of terms in a Geometric Sequence.

The remainder of the period we finished our discussion on Finite Geometric Series, developing a formula to find the sum of the first n terms of a Geometric Series.

Hwk #6 is due on Monday, September 16, 2019.  Practice Sheet problems 1-3 and Agile Mind Website; Topic 1:  Exploring; More Practice pages 6-8.

Thursday, September 12, 2019

Bellwork gave students practice finding the sum of a series, writing a series in sigma notation, and finding the explicit and recursive formulas for a sequence.

Hwk #5 is due today.

The remainder of the period we began discussing   Topic 1; Exploring; Geometric Sequences and Series. Students worked on a SAS3 question 2 which leads to writing a rule for a situation either as an Explicit Geometric Formula, a Recursive Geometric Formula, or an Exponential Function.

Wednesday, September 11, 2019

Bellwork gave students practice using recursive formulas to find terms in a sequence and finding sums of terms in an arithmetic series.

The remainder of the period we finished our discussion on Sigma/Summation notation for arithmetic series.

Hwk #5 is due tomorrow.  Problem #15 on SAS2 and More Practice pages 1-5 from Topic 1; Exploring: Arithmetic Sequences and series.

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Bellwork gave students practice finding the first four terms of a sequence using Explicit and Recursive Formulas, and finding the sum of the terms in an Arithmetic Sequence.

Hwk #4 is due today.

The remainder of the period we began our discussion on Sigma/Summation Notation for an Arithmetic Series.  Students answered question 12 from SAS2 Topic 1 – Exploring.

Students were given Hwk #5.  Due date is still to be determined for this assignment.  Part of this assignment is to be done with paper and pencil and part of the assignment is to answer questions from the Agilemind Website.  The window will close at 11:59pm on Thursday 9-12-19 to complete this part of the homework.

Monday, September 9, 2019

Bellwork gave students a chance to write Explicit and Recursive Formulas for Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences as well as sequences that are neither.

We discussed examples of how to find the first few terms of a sequence given either the Explicit or Recursive Formulas.

Hwk #4 is due tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, 2019  SAS2 – Topic 1 Exploring – questions 2 and 8.

The remainder of the period we began discussing Arithmetic Series.  Students answered SAS2 Exploring: “Arithmetic Sequences and Series”, questions 9 and 10 in class.  We discussed a short cut method (formula) for finding the sum of the terms in an Arithmetic Series such as the sum of the first 100 Natural Numbers.

Friday, September 6, 2019

Bellwork gave students practice using Function Notation and writing explicit formulas for sequences.

The remainder of the period we continued our discussion on Sequences using the Agile Mind website to introduce the Recursive Formula.  Students worked on questions 3-6 from Student Activity Sheet2 (SAS2).

Students were given Hwk #4, Questions 2 and 8 from SAS2.  This homework will be due on Tuesday, September 10, 2019.

Thursday, September 5, 2019

Today students worked on an Agile Mind Scavenger Hunt.  This activity had them work through a series of questions that had them explore the Agile Mind Website and many of the different features and resources available.

Hwk #3 is due today.

Towards the end of the period we went over Hwk #3 and continued looking at Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences, and how Domain and Range relate to a sequence we worked on previously.

Wednesday, September 4, 2019

Bellwork had students explore the rates of change for Linear, Quadratic, Cubic, and Exponential Functions.

After the bellwork we continued to explore the relationships between Arithmetic & Geometric Sequences with Linear & Exponential Functions.  Students explored how sequences of the perimeters of shapes can lead to Arithmetic and Geometric sequences which can help predict future perimeters by finding patterns and not having to actually draw the figures to find their perimeters.  We also continued to go over Student Activity Sheet (SAS) 1 as well as use the Agile Mind Website throughout our discussion.  Students were told how they could access the Agile Mind Website:

Web Address:  https://dearborn.agilemind.com

Username and Password are both the students Dearborn Schools ID number.

Hwk #3 is due tomorrow.  Questions 9 and 10 from Student Activities Sheet 1.

Tuesday, September 3, 2019

Bellwork gave students practice writing an explicit formula for a sequence and using this formula to predict the 40th term.  Students also practiced finding Domain and Range.

This semester we are testing out a new publisher of Algebra 2 to see if we are interested in purchasing it in order to replace the old textbooks we’ve been using for over 10 years.  This curriculum is called Agile Mind.  It has many online components as well as paper/pencil components.  Students will often be working on Student Activity Sheets (SAS) which they will usually be given paper copies of.  These can also be found online.  There will also be several “animations” to show the students in order to present material as well as pose questions for them to answer.  These can also be found online.

Today we began Topic 1:  Arithmetic and Geometric Series and Sequences.  Students were given a copy of SAS1 and we worked though the first four questions.

Tomorrow students will be given an Agile Mind Scavenger Hunt in order to explore the resources available to them on the Agile Mind website.  They will be given a username and password to access the Agile Mind website.

There was no homework assigned today.  Click on the links below for a copy of today’s bellwork with answers, a copy of SAS1, and notes/examples from today’s lesson:
