Pre-Testing

Students throughout the District are taking Pre-Tests for rhythmic composition this month.  Our Salina and Long students will be participating in the Pre-Test this week and next week.  Our goal is to be able to compose a 4 measure rhythmic composition and perform it correctly.  Since this is a pre-test we do allow for errors to be made.  Later this year all students will be tested again and they should have a much higher success rate with the composition and performance.

You are welcome to stop in and observe us working on the project.  Each performance will be video taped for my class records.  You may ask to see what your son’s or daughter’s video.

A Salina Student Performs with the Dearborn Symphony!

Naeema Omar, at 5th grader at Salina Intermediate School, represented our community very well this past Thursday.  She, along with a select group of students throughout the District performed a section of Ode to Joy along with the Dearborn Symphony at the Annual Dearborn Youth Concert.  What a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience a live performance of a professional orchestra.  What a fantastic opportunity for these talented youth to experience performing on stage with this fine orchestra.  This could be the beginning of an exciting musical career.  🙂

Instrumental Music and Honors Choir for Salina Intermediate Students

What are your options for instrumental and vocal music participation at Salina Intermediate School this year?

5th Grade Students

If you are in 5th grade you will have the privilege of learning a new instrument during an afternoon music class.  Mrs. Reed is at Salina on alternating afternoons to you will need to mark your planner so you are prepared for class on the correct day.  All students wishing to participate in this program must have your application papers turned in this week (by October 9) to participate.  We still have scholarship money available to assist you with the instrument use fee.

6th-8th Grade Students

We are fortunate enough to be able to offer a Strings Class which will be held once per week either before school or after school.  Meet with Mrs. Reed on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 3:05-3:50 in room 115 for more details.  Together we will decide if we should meet before or after school.  There is no fee to participate in this class.

Honors Choir for 4-8 Grade Students

We will also have the opportunity to have an Honors Choir consisting of students in grades 4-8.  Our first meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, 3:05-3:50 in room 114.  We will discuss a rehearsal schedule as well as performance options.

How do you Practice?

My husband came across this website and he thought I might like to share it with you.  He’s the best!  So, how DO you practice?  Wynton is a famous trumpet player.  He loves to play jazz and classical music.  He has some great tips for practicing effectively.

Wynton’s Practice Tips

Read his tips and then let me know what you think about them.  Is there one in particular that speaks out to you?  Have a great week, practice and play hard.  I will see you soon!

Band Videos

Band students have a really cool website linked to the method book we are using.  Use this LINK to get to the main page.  Trumpets, I suggest you watch the Lip Slurs video.  Everyone would benefit from watching the embouchure videos…..why stop there.  Watch them all!  🙂
