Chromebook – Signing in
The Chromebook must be signed into by a Dearborn Public Schools account. No other log-ins will work.
- All students should know their usernames and password.
- A personal Gmail account can NOT sign into a Dearborn Public School’s Chromebook.
- Parents should monitor technology use for children of all ages.
- The Chromebook will need to be connected to Wi-Fi using the family personal password.
Internet Access
Chromebooks require internet access and have Wi-Fi built-in. Dearborn Public Schools cannot provide internet home access. Comcast has an Internet Essentials package for families that qualify. This program is currently free for 60 days. After the 60 days, Internet Essentials will cost $9.95 per month. (You can apply online: https://apply.internetessentials.com/) Dearborn Public Schools does NOT have an affiliation with Comcast. Individual families are responsible for any costs of the service.
Qualifications for Internet Essentials:
- You are eligible for public assistance programs such as the National School Lunch Program, Housing Assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, and others
- You do not have an outstanding debt to Comcast that is less than a year old.
- You live in an area where Comcast is available but have not subscribed to it within the last 90 days.
Xfinity Wi-Fi Free
Xfinity WiFi Free For Everyone: Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, visit www.xfinity.com/wifi. Once at a hotspot, consumers should select the “xfinitywifi” network name in the list of available hotspots and then launch a browser.
Instructions for Chromebook Cleaning
Step 1: Power off the device. You will be applying liquid solutions to your Chromebook, so powering it off is a must.
Step 2: Remove any accessories or plug-ins such as cases, USBs, and headphones. These should be wiped down as well (especially headphones – which should NOT be foam).
Step 3: Clean the screen with an LCD-safe solution applied to a microfiber cloth. Strong alcohols can eat away the coating on LCD screens. *NOTE: A damp microfiber cloth does well with cleaning screens.
(**Given current concerns, wiping the screen with a “Clorox” wipe is acceptable. This will reduce the lifespan of the display, however, preventing disease spreading is more important).
Step 4: Clean the Keyboard and other non-screen parts. Clorox wipes (mild bleach wipes) can be used on the keyboard and all the other non-screen parts. The wipe should be “squeezed” so that it does NOT over-saturate the keyboard (make sure to let the keyboards dry…before you close the lids…)
*NEVER Spray anything on a computer. Remember to “wring out” any saturated wipes prior to using on a Chromebook.
** Although microfiber is not technically a disinfectant, it is effective in removing germs and bacteria. However, it does need to be washed regularly.
