-There is no spelling, but we will be doing a spell check activity today. I am going to post a paragraph that students have to fix using spell check to give them extra practice. Due Friday.
Writing
-Make sure to turn in the “Pick Your Stance” worksheet today. There will be a new video posted and another assignment to start in writing tomorrow.
Math
-We are going to be doing Module 5 Lesson 7 today! We are still working with equivalent fractions. This lesson is key when showing that you can multiply the top and bottom numbers in a fraction by the same number to make it equivalent. Assignment: 1. Optional: Watch the Eureka math video while doing the homework as practice, check your answers with the answer key. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGrrxdWiFnI 2. Required: Watch the virtual lesson from Great Minds. https://gm.greatminds.org/en-us/knowledge-for-grade-4-em-m5l7 3. Problem Set. Must do: 1 b,c,d 3 a,b,c. Due Thursday.
Here is an important tip I wanted to remind you of this week: ** Some of you turn in your work by emailing it to me and that is fine. However, Google Classroom also needs you to hit the “turn in” button so it does not mark it as late. It may be easier if you transition and just start turning more things in on Google Classroom.**
Here is a look at today:
Spelling
-Instead of spelling, we are working on spell check this week. So far, I have only linked a video. There are no new assignments today. Tomorrow, I will have students do some spell check practicing.
Writing
-The schedule has been changed a little bit to help lessen the load this week. -You still need to watch the video of Mrs. J and fill out the “Pick a Stance” worksheet by Wednesday. Also, make sure to read the articles and not just come up with your own ideas. – There will be a new video on Thursday of what to do next. We will be working on this opinion writing for two weeks.
Math
-No new assignments today. Please send Module 5 Lesson 6 to me. Today is a Zearn day.
Reading
-I will be reading the next few chapters today in Wonder on Google Hangouts at 12:30! (Pages 20-33) If you cannot make the reading lesson hangout today, I will record it and post it on Google Classroom. You need to answer the slides if you do not make it and turn it in to me. We answers all the slides together on Hangout.
Social Studies
-We are starting a new unit in Social Studies called Economics! We will have an assignment today to complete and one on Thursday. Assignment: 1. Look at the vocab cards and definitions for this lesson I have attached. 2. One of the words we are learning are goods and services. Watch this Brainpop Video on it! https://jr.brainpop.com/socialstudies/economics/goodsandservices/ Username: hullroom207 Password: lindbergh2020 (You can take the quiz or do the joke on Brainpop- students liked to do that in school) 3. Read Section 1: What is Economics? in our online S.S. textbook (pg 56-58) http://textbooks.wmisd.org/Downloads/4th/Chapter2.pdf Make sure to try the interactive activities and videos in the book too! I especially like the School House Rock video. 4. Answer the “Stop and Think” questions on Google Docs that are from the section you read. Due Thursday
I can tell there is a little confusion on reading groups this week. Make sure to read your WHOLE assignment on Google Classroom for your specific group.
I love that I see some students already on Raz Kids! It is a cool website. Some of you think that you need to just read a book for reading group. I have assigned a specific book I want you to read.
Your Raz Kids should look something like this. You need to find the spot where it says “Assignments” to see the book I assigned to you.
Here are the titles for each group.
Blue- No Raz Kids Yellow- No Raz Kids Orange- Curiosity on Mars Green- Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsumanis Red- World Cup Soccer

Sharpen the Saw!
We are going to look at Habit 8 this week, which is finding your voice. It is a combination of what your talents and passions are, what the need is around you, and what your concience is telling you to do.
I met with my team today and we decided to change the writing requirements for this week to help lessen the load.
Instead of doing a whole opinion piece in a week- we are going to stretch it out for two weeks. This changes when things are due. I apologize for the inconvenience, but hope this helps!
Everything else will remain the same for this week.
Happy Monday Everyone! If you did not read my Sunday post, please do. It has district information that has an updated learning plan and my “week at a glance” calendar so you can help organize this week!
Please note: I will be recording completed assignments this week and give you a “progress report” if students are missing work. Grades will be given- even for Specials (gym, music, art, enrichment). I will show points you receive on things you turn into Google Classroom and give feedback, so look back at the private messages I send you on assignments.
Here is a look at today:
No Spelling
-We are not going to be doing a spelling list this week. SpellingCity has taken away a lot of the free features and I personally think our group needs a break. So this week, I wanted to focus on something more relevant to the times we are in. We are going to be doing some spell check lessons! Assignment: 1. Today, while students are doing other assignments- I want them to practice capital letters (using the shift key), practice periods, question marks (using the shift key), and going to a new line using ENTER. 2. We are also going to be learning how to spell check our work Watch this video today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgs0-Xup_Dg 3. Later this week- I will have a document that I would like them to practice their spelling checking skills. For now, students can continue practice their typing skills first and get a sense of the keys on the keyboard by typing on typingclub.com
Writing
-We are starting an opinion writing piece this week. It will be about what is going on in our world. Our goal in 4th grade is to make writing authentic and real, so students find it more engaging to complete. Our prompt this week will be “Should community members stay home while people are getting sick from coronavirus?” Assignment: 1. Watch the video that Ms. Juntunen made for us to introduce what we are doing! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r5boH84TIFXiOr_7jUAL3FcKUPZZz-9A/view 2. Read the NewsELA article and watch the YouTube video. You can also read the “Operation Gridlock” and “Not Everyone Can Stay At Home” articles on your own instead of watching that part of the video or you can listen to those articles on the video of Ms. J. 3. Complete the graphic organizer by listing reasons for each stance and then picking your stance. (On Google Classroom) **Tasks 1-3 should be worked on today and tomorrow. We will start creating a graphic organizer on Wednesday! Sources: https://youtu.be/ZxB-vohL4WA
-I hope everyone is doing okay with fractions!! It is a big step in 4th grade. We are heavily focusing on the next few lessons on how to find equivalent fractions. Help students out by using real life examples. For example, if you had friends over for a birthday party and you wanted to share your cake equally. If 6 friends show up you can share equally. If 12 friends show up you can still share equally, but think about how the pieces will look different. Assignment: 1. In today’s lesson, you are finding equivalent fractions using the same shaded model. In 1a for example, I see rectangles and squares. If I count the shaded area of rectangles, I would see 2 shaded out of 3. That makes the fraction 2/3. If I count the squares, I see 4 shaded out of 6. That makes the fraction 4/6. 2/3 is equivalent to 4/6. Optional: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH5qMicq6uE Watch the Eureka video, try the homework while watching, check your answers with the key. 2. Watch the virtual lesson. It is important to watch the whole thing through even if it seems long. There is some fluency practice in the lesson as well. https://gm.greatminds.org/en-us/knowledge-for-grade-4-em-m5l6 **Remember if the video doesn’t work from this link- you can go to Greatminds.org and click on Knowledge of the Go resources. Find our grade level and lesson number under Eureka Math. 3. Complete the Problem Set and send it to me. Due Tuesday. Must do: 1 a,b 2 a,b (1 a has been started for you)
-There is a Readworks article today called: Going Up a Mountain. It is Due Friday. You can have one redo. It integrates nicely with what we have been learning in Science! You can find the assignment on the Google Classroom Stream. Reading Groups: – I am changing what some reading groups will be doing for their reading group assignments. Blue group and yellow group and going to finish their chapter books first, but they are welcome to use this new website for books too! Assignment: 1. Go to www.kidsa-z.com 2. Type in my teacher name: MrsHull207 (no spaces) 3. Find your name 4. Type in password: 1234 5. In assignments- you will see the book you have to read for the week! 6. You need to read the book and take the bok quiz online by Friday. If you are in blue or yellow, you do not have an assignment yet. You can access books by going to the Reading Room and finding books at your level.
Social Studies
-I will post our assignment on Tuesday. We will have an assignment on Tuesday and Thursday this week. We are starting a new unit on Economics!

Sharpen the Saw!
One of the things that I find very relaxing or helpful during stressful times is journaling and getting all of my thoughts/ideas out. Many of you in my room were interested in time capsules (some of you were even making some and trying to dig at recess to hid them) A time capsule is a good chance to write down things about this time…let’s face it- we are apart of a big moment in history that we will be discussing for years to come!
My challenge today is to create your own time capsule. You do not have to do this- it is just a suggestion. I will let you know on days that I want you to do a 7 habits activity. Note: This time capsule has a lot of pages! Just pick a do which ones you want and that interest you!
Hey parents! We use Daily 5 for reading in school and we spend a lot of time in the beginning of the year “building stamina” with reading. You may find that it feels like the start of the year again and your child is not focused while reading. Here are some AWESOME videos to help your child build reading stamina at home from the Daily 5 website. They are short, interactive, and it teaches your child step by step. Check them out!
It is a long document- I encourage everyone to read through it so you know the expectations!! However, I am going to just write a couple of key points down here so you know how things might change or shift. Luckily, we have been doing most of the requirements this whole time, so it makes it an easier transition for us- go Lindbergh! 1. Grades will be given. Pay close attention to assignment due dates! 2. I will communicate with you if your child is not turning in work 3. Students in 4th grade should be learning 20 minutes per subject each day (100 hours per subject per week) 4. I will hold two virtual learning sessions a week 5. I will have office hours on Tuesday and Thursday virtually to help/answer questions 6. I will communicate 2X a week (or more) with each student
There are more than this- this is just an quick overview!
Since we do not do every subject every day (for the 20 minutes a day) here is a rough outline of how it is broken down by our class and in 4th grade as a whole: Math- 3 lessons a week at approximately 25-30 minutes a lesson= 90 minutes. Additional time being spent on Zearn or Khan Academy. (I suggest on Tuesday and Thursdays) Reading- two lessons a week at approximately 30 minutes a lesson= 60 The other 40 minutes is split up between Readworks (once a week), Reading Group assignments, and reading books. Science/Social Studies- two lessons per week at approximately 45 minutes per lesson= 90-95 minutes per week. The other additional minutes are integrated through other content areas or are extra videos shared. Writing– this looks typically different than the rest. Work about 20 minutes each day for the 100 minutes total (more time spent at the end of the week)
Of course, communication is critical during this time!! Feel free to ask me questions, join an office hour, email me and I will get back to you quickly!!
I am so excited to say that Rax Kids is now free to 4th grade! If you haven’t heard of it- it is a great resource for reading books at student’s own levels. This is how we are going to be doing our reading group work from now on (except for my two groups finishing up their chapter books)
So for reading groups now, you will log on to Rax Kids- read the book I assigned and answer the questions (using the book to help). You can absolutely read more than the book I have assigned for the week. There are a lot of incentives for reading more- you can move up levels, change your avatar, earn stars, etc. *Keep in mind, I did set your child at the level they were with me before we went online. I understand some levels may be different now due to this change. Please let me know- I can adjust levels easily.
Directions: 1. Go to www.kidsa-z.com 2. Type in my name like this: MrsHull207 3. Find your name 4. Type in 1234 in the password box
I hope everyone had a good week adjusting back to the schedule after spring break. I know this can take a toll on us and it is important to keep in mind the social emotional needs of everyone right now. For that reason, I have created a student “check-in” that I want students to fill out today to let me know their schedules, how they are doing, how the workload is etc. This will be our “Sharpen the Saw” activity today, but I want students to do their best to fill it out. It will help me moving forward when the district has the new learning plan in place to address everyone’s needs.
Side note: If you are turning in assignments to me through email, you also have to go on to Google Classroom and hit “turn in” Otherwise, Google Classroom will send you a notification saying that it is missing or late. I have had students reach out saying they turned things into me, but Google Classroom says it is missing. I am working on making a better plan for that issue. For the meantime, make sure to click the button on Google Classroom or turn your work in there instead of emailing me if possible.
Here is a look at our day:

It is important to incorporate some movement into your day! My challenge today is to get some physical activity in today whether it is inside or outside. I found some great workout videos for kids that are featuring some NFL players. Check them out! Mr. Harvey might have already shared this with you since it is apart of the American Heart Association.
Happy Monday! I hope you enjoyed your spring break. I read a few books that have been sitting on my shelf for far too long and painted all of the doors in my house!
Like I said in yesterday’s post. Some things have changed to our schedule and I will explain them here! So please make sure to read everything on the blog today thoroughly. Contact me if you have any questions about it.
Spelling
-We are starting list 27 this week. The pattern is changing the ending “y” to “ied” Here are the words for this week (they are also on SpellingCity): 1. accompanied 2. implied 3. scurried 4. varied 5. replied 6. studied 7. hurried 8. notified 9. worried 10. applied 11. fraction 12. decompose 13. numerator 14. sum 15. improper There are no assignments today. Just practice the words, make flash cards, or play a game on SpellingCity.
Writing
-This week, we are taking some time to thank the healthcare workers and essential workers that are out there working very hard. I am sure some of you may have households with essential workers or know someone who is one. We can never thank them enough for all that they are doing during this time!! I personally have a connection to someone in the healthcare field. My sister-in-law is a CRNA who works at St. Mary’s in Livonia. She reached out to me asking if I could send some thank you messages to her from Lindbergh students, so she can hang them up in the hospital and spread some positivity! Assignment: -You have a choice on how you would like to thank a healthcare worker. You can create a card, make a poster, write a thank you letter, make a picture, etc. – Make sure whatever option you chose, you try your best and create some positive messages to help brighten someone’s day:) – When you are done, take a picture of what you made (you can be in the picture to if you would like) and I will have my sister-in-law print and hang up your messages in St. Mary’s Hospital. Send the picture to me at hullj@dearbornschools.org Here are some examples of what you can do:
If you are unsure of an idea, send it to me and I will let you know! This will be due on Wednesday.
Math
-Math is a little bit different starting this week. Greatminds.org came out with a really excellent resource over Spring Break. There is a teacher who is recording her virtually teaching all the lessons. I have watched them and they are GREAT! They are a little bit longer, so therefore, I am making the homework and the other Eureka math video optional. I still would encourage you to watch the Eureka Youtube video first (they are typically short) while trying to do the homework at the same time. Check the homework with the answer key and then start the math assignment. However, I am only requiring you now to watch the virtual lessons from Greatminds and doing the Problem Set. Assignments are still on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday I will post a Google Hangout link from 3-3:30. I will be available during that time to help with math/answer questions. That will not be the time for the class to just hangout and talk- that will still just be on Friday. Assignment: Module 5 Lesson 3- We are learning how to take an addition sentence using fractions and also write it as a multiplication sentence. 1. Optional: Watch the Eureka math lesson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_ujfz8bqmk (Lesson 3) Homework Must do: 1 a,b,c,d,e and 2 and the check with answer key 2. Watch the virtual lesson for Lesson 3 https://gm.greatminds/en-us/knowledge-for-grade-4-em-m5l3.org If this link doesn’t work, go to Greatminds.org make sure you are on the page called Knowledge on the Go, find 4th grade, click Module 5 and find Lesson 3. 3. Problem Set. Must do: 1 a,b,c,d,e and 2. Send it to me (either on Google Classroom, Remind, or Email) Due Tuesday
-Reading has changed a little bit too! One of my favorite things to do in our classroom is to read a class chapter book. We have already read a few together such as BFG, Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing. I want to continue reading a class chapter book together even though it has to be online. I think this will help with motivation and I will be able to see everyone more often- which is a bonus!! I am going to be reading the book Wonder. I will read Tuesday and Thursday this week at 12:30-1:00. I will send out a Google Hangout link on Google Classroom. I only ask that students have index cards or paper and something to write with. I will read the book to them online, we will chat and type messages with discussion questions, I will have them create vocabulary cards, and there will be an assignment for them to do at the end of the week Friday. I will post more information about this tomorrow. If a student cannot attend the Google Classroom chapter read, no worries! I will record it and post a video for them to watch it whenever they can and the discussion questions will be posted as well.
Since we will be reading a chapter book and doing work with that, I am reducing some of the independent reading work. I still ask that students are reading 25 minutes nightly and keeping up with their reading group assignments. Beyond that, I am just assigning one Readworks article this week that will be posted today and due by Friday. Students will have on chance to re-do it if need be. I will focus on current events or nonfiction since we will be working on fiction together with the Wonder book. Assignment: 1. Readworks article called Picking up the Pieces (assigned on Google Classroom). Questions due Friday. 2. Reading Group Work (assigned on Google Classroom) due Friday.
Science
-No assignment today, a new one will be posted tomorrow. If you want to get a head start, you can click the link and watch the videos on the weekly calendar.
