Miller Elementary Week of May 18-2020
Dearest Miller Families,
Team Miller sending their love and well wishes to all with hopes you are well, safe and taking care of one another. With Ramadan entering its final week, we send blessings to all celebrating Eid this coming weekend.
Critically important students remain engaged in virtual learning and completing classroom lessons DAILY. We are relying on our parents to be the bridge between school and home by continuing to monitor and assist students with completion of learning tasks. At minimum students should be checking and completing assignments posted on Teacher’s Google Classroom, reading every day twenty minutes via i-Ready. Students choosing not to engage in virtual learning will be REQUIRED to attend Summer School and are at risk of repeating the grade!
Administrators will be coordinating with the PTA and Miller Staff to schedule virtual grade level parent meetings aimed at discussing end of the year questions and listen to parent concerns and recommendations, your active engagement and feedback would be appreciated, meeting schedule and guidelines forthcoming. Distribution and collection of student materials will take place the first week of June, summer learning materials, supplies and students’ personal belongings will be distributed while classroom and library books collected.
All Miller families should have received a PEBT Food Card, attached is an informational question and answer sheet to assist and guide parents with use of this valuable resource. Kindergarten Round Up Power Point is currently being translated and will be posted on the school website later this week. Links to District and Miller websites attached, continue providing the most up to date information, please make a point to check regularly. Gleaners Food Bank distribution is scheduled for June 2, 2020, please plan accordingly.

WE MISS YOU video
I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the quality family time with loved ones. Adjusting to the Governors Stay at Home Executive Order ensures we all remain safe and do our part to decrease the spread of COVID-19. Understandably this new normal comes with increased uncertainty, please take care of yourselves and loved ones and continue following guidelines communicated by the State of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Service https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus . Continue speaking to and practicing recommended safety precautions to mitigate the spread of COVID – 19: social distancing, proper hygiene habits and healthy eating is a great start and will be the new normal moving forward.
Miller Staff continue using new tools and/or mastering the current technology to support on-line learning and maintain students’ academic, social and emotional growth. Thankfully Dearborn Public Schools and Miller Elementary Staff are state leaders when it comes to on-line learning and technology integration.
Miller Staff remain committed to supporting student virtual learning and continue:
1) Posting weekly academic enrichment lessons, online physical activities and special resources to assist students with instruction and enrichment activities. Please access and sign up for teacher Blog posts at: https://miller.dearbornschools.org/parents/school-news/

3) Please forward any questions to staff or administration and we will gladly respond.
4) Gleaners Food Bank is Tuesday March 31, 2020 at 11 a.m. and will be conducted via curbside pickup. IMPORTANT – DO NOT exit your vehicle,

One person at a time will be processed at the table, please do not approach the table until notified by a staff member to approach. Ensuring everyone’s safety is the top priority and requires we work together, if safety guidelines are not followed violators will immediately be asked to leave.
Stay, Safe, Healthy and Take care of your families. During these unprecedented times, I encourage you to do what is necessary to protect your loved ones. It is disappointing but very necessary given these times as we need to do our part to flatten the curve and support our medical service workers who are going above and beyond to help those who are sick or in need of medical assistance. We can all do our part!
What We know and don’t know: Unfortunately, this situation is very fluid and we do not have answers to all questions that may be out there. The Governor stated Friday morning she does not think that we will return to school this year. Team Miller and the Dearborn Public Schools will continue to plan for that possibility along with the possibility of returning. Regardless of the outcome I’m comforted we will continue supporting students, one another and the Miller Community during these unprecedented times. Stay SAFE STAY HOME!

Good Evening Miller Parent(s),
I hope you are well and enjoying the true madness of March. With the latest COVID-19 pandemic now infiltrating Michigan it is best we don’t pay attention to the many misnomers floating around social media, but instead educate ourselves regarding the science behind the virus. Please access the Wayne County Health Department at the following URL for the most up to date information:
https://www.waynecounty.com/de
We need to maintain vigilance and promote regular and effective hygiene habits with our students and throughout the community. Modeling and educating our students and parents whenever and wherever possible will help prevent the spread of ALL communicable diseases. Our community must must join together and maintain a sense of urgency, heightened awareness, calmness and rational thinking. When children and adults within the home become sick please seek medical attention from a health are provider and do not send sick students to school. Wash hands regularly with soap and water throughout the day, before and after meals. The COVID-19 is not an ordinary scenario and should not be treated as such. There will be measures taken we may not necessarily agree with, but must do what is necessary to preserve a safe, healthy and prospering school environment. Every precaution will be taken at the school level to ensure daily disinfection of all learning spaces is maintained at the highest possible standard. As with every situation we will look to the experts for guidance and next steps. I will provide daily updates and policies the Dearborn Public Schools adopts as they become available and want to thank everyone in advance for the continued teamwork and proactive approach to tackling this challenge together. We are hear to answer any questions or concerns you may have, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at 313 827-6854.

Message From Your Principal:
March 19, 2019
Dear Miller Parents,
This morning a student walking to the bus stop misinterpreted a driver’s hand signal as a Stranger-Danger incident. The student ran to a neighbor’s house and alerted them of the encounter, the helpful neighbor welcomed her in and school administration was contacted. Dearborn Police were called to investigate and after reviewing camera footage, police determined there was no credible threat to the student. Thankfully this was not a Stranger- Danger incident; instead it is a great teachable moment and opportunity to review safety and Stranger – Danger with your child. The student running to a neighbor’s house, notifying the School Office and taking precautionary measures were the RIGHT choices to make!
Spring is a great time to change batteries in the smoke detectors and even a better time to discuss Stranger-Danger with our children. Remind children to report anything suspicious or out of the ordinary and to always error on the side of caution. Looking out for one another and being kind neighbors are important to building a strong community. The Dearborn Police Department is committed to ensuring safe, healthy and nurturing neighborhoods; safeguarding children and building strong relationships with citizens remains the priority! Help build a stronger community and keep our children safe by discussing good safety habits to adopt while playing throughout the neighborhood.
Here are a few helpful reminders:
- Never talk to a stranger.
- Never get into a car with a stranger, even if they tell you they are looking for a lost pet or someone you know is hurt and they will take you to them.
- Children should walk to and from school with other children.
- Always report suspicious characters to parents, teachers and the police.
- If approached by a stranger, tell an adult.
Keeping a watchful eye and being a good neighbor makes our community a great place. Checking in and maintaining an open line of communication with your children, neighbors, schools and police department ensures WE are prepared for life’s challenges.
Have a safe and wonderful start to Spring-2019!
Respectfully,

Dearborn Shines Contest (Student Post)
Hi, my name is Dania Alsaidi from Mr.Duering 5th grade class.
I wanted to share some exciting information with you about our Dearborn Shines Project. In anticipation of the upcoming planting season we are asking for students input to determine the vegetable and herbs to purchase and plant in our garden.
To make this a memorable time we have some fun voting and contest activities. This will provide you with essential background information so that students can cast an informed vote. We have also given everyone a contest packet for students to work on. From these submissions, your class will be entered in a school-wide contest to claim the spot of planting your schools pollinator garden bed!
Stay tuned for updates throughout the week and some exciting healthy tips we will be sharing.
Hi, my name is Reem Saleh and I am a student in Mrs. Traicoff’s 4th grade class.
Here is Monday’s Healthy Tip:
It is important to fill HALF of your plate with fruits and vegetables every day. Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins and provide our body with the super power to fight off illness. For example, we know red fruits and vegetables are full lycopene which can help prevent certain types of cancer. Our school garden will soon be full of colorful fruits and vegetables. Think of some of your favorite fruits and vegetables and different ways you might eat them.

Greetings Miller Families,
As a community we’ve had wonderful success in establishing safe and consistent traffic guidelines and expectations for the Miller Community.
Thank you for the continued commitment to student safety and support with traffic initiatives.
Over the past two years the Miller PTA and Administration have teamed up to pursue a $200,000 Safe Routes to School Grant, which will further improve traffic flow and establish safe walking and biking paths for Miller students.
We are entering a critical stage in the grant process and we need your support. A Community Forum will be held in the Miller Cafeteria on Tuesday February 26, 2019 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. Community attendance, feedback and active participation at this meeting is critical to successfully securing the Safe Routes to School Grant.

Literacy Essentials
“The purpose of system-wide and center-wide literacy practices is to improve children’s literacy in Michigan. These systematic and effective practices implemented at the organizational level in education and care settings help children become proficient in reading.
To meet the needs of all young learners in Michigan, organizational practices must support literacy development in ways that systematically impact learning in elementary schools, early childhood learning centers, and other literacy programs and environments.
Expert research suggests that each of the 10 practices outlined in this document can have a positive impact on literacy development. The use of these practices in every Michigan classroom every day can make a measurable, positive difference in the state’s literacy achievement.” (https://literacyessentials.org/essentials/)

Outdoor Siren Testing – Thursday, March 8, 2018
News from the City of DearbornJohn B. O’Reilly, Jr., Mayor |
Department of Public Information
Mary Laundroche, Director 313-943-2285 |
February 27, 2018 Dearborn to individually test outdoor emergency sirens on Thursday, March 8
One-by-one tests will occur periodically during the day
DEARBORN, Mich. – The City of Dearborn will be individually testing outdoor emergency sirens on Thursday, March 8. Residents and visitors should not be alarmed if they hear a nearby siren sound. Siren tests will start about 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 8 and continue periodically throughout the testing window in different areas of the city. Dearborn has 19 emergency outdoor sirens. Emergency personnel and technicians will sound the alarms one at a time during this Thursday, March 8 testing to ensure each is working properly and can be heard appropriately. An alarm could be sounded more than once on Thursday, March 8. This is part of a periodic, more thorough testing of the emergency alert system. Dearborn will continue to hold citywide monthly tests on the first Saturday at 1 p.m. Outdoor emergency sirens are designed to quickly warn people who are out-of-doors about threats, including severe weather, such as tornados, so they can take cover. The City of Dearborn also uses the sirens when it declares a snow emergency in the winter, so residents know not to park their vehicles on the street. In an actual emergency– if time allows– information may also posted on the City website at www.cityofdearborn.org and on social media at www.Facebook.com/cityofdearborn. Dearborn Police also distribute emergency information to residents who register for it through its Nixle alert system. Sign up at Nixle.com. Because Nixle messages are controlled by the police, they are likely to be more timely in an emergency than the city’s website or social media. The City thanks residents for their patience during the upcoming siren testing. This work is part of ongoing efforts to ensure Dearborn provides top-quality safety measures for residents, workers and visitors in Dearborn.
