School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

Physical Education Class for the week of Oct 31st-Nov 4th

This will be a shorter week, because we there is a half day on Friday.  This week, I will be making a transition to my new units.  I will have the kindergarten-2nd grade students start my hula-hoop unit and the 3rd-5th grade students will start my football unit.  The lower elementary students will learn a variety of individual skills with a hula hoop.  Then at the end of the unit the student will learn about and practice relay races using the hula hoops.  The upper elementary students will start the week with one of the games I usually play between unit.  For the second class of the week, for the classes I actually see twice, I will start my football unit.  This unit will mainly focus on throwing and catching.  To finish this unit, I will have a drill that uses flag belts and the student will keep track of their score.

Physical Education Class for the week of Oct 24th-28th

This week, I am going to be doing testing with all of my classes.  I like to use stations to test, so I am able to focus my attention on a small group of students.  When I am testing the students at one station the other students in the class are able to practice a variety of object control skills at the other stations.  During the stations, I will  test all of the classes on the instep kick for soccer.  Each grade will have it’s own criteria for the skill.  For example. the 3rd-5th grade classes will be tested on specific steps of the skill and accuracy.  The K-1st classes will also be tested on hoping and the 2nd grade classes will be tested on galloping during the stations.  The testing will just take one class to finish with the 1st-5th grade classes, but it will take two classes to finish with Kindergarten.  Then for the second class of the week for the 3rd-5th graders, I will have them play a another game of sideline soccer.  This is a modified game of indoor soccer.

4th and 5th Grade Physical Fitness Tests 1st Marking Period

The 4th and 5th grade students will be running almost every class for the first two months of the school year.  Please have students bring the appropriate clothes to wear for cool weather running outside.  We will start by running around the gym for different amounts of time.  We will then go outside and run a 1/2 mile (2 laps) on the track.  The next run will be a 1 mile run (4 laps) on the track.  This will not be a grade on their report card, but I will write down their time as a pre-test for the Presidential Physical Fitness Test at the end of the year.  The final run will be a 13 min run for the 4th graders and a 15 min run for the 5th graders.  The number of laps they complete for these runs will give them their physical fitness grade on their report card for the first marking period.  The standards and grades are listed below.

Soccer Unit K-5th grade

Starting the last week in September all of my classes will be starting soccer in class.  Each grade will learn at a different pace and learn skills at different ability levels throughout the unit.  There will be main skills that each grade will learn during the unit.  For example, they all will learn the foot dribble, trapping, changing direction, and instep kick.  All classes will play lead-up games that include soccer skills, but the 2nd – 5th graders will play more of a real soccer game to end the unit.  These games will be modified to fit each grade appropriately.  All grade K-5th will be tested on the instep kick to end the unit in different ways to fit their grade.  This skill will be the object control grade for the first marking period.
