Physical Education Class for the Week of Sep 25th-29th

This week, I will continue to work on soccer skills with all of my classes K-5th grade.  Last week, I taught and had the students practice the foot dribble, trapping, and changing directions.  I always try my best to teach and have the students practice skills that are developmentally appropriate for their grade level.  This week, the main skills I will teach and have the students practice will be passing and the instep Kick.  I will have them practice it in a variety of ways and have them play lead-up games that incorporate the skills.

I will have the K-1st grade students practice their locomotor skill for this marking period, which is hoping.  The 2nd graders will also practice their locomotor skill for this marking period, which is galloping.  I will have them practice the skills around the red line and during tagging games.

The 4th and 5th grade students will run outside at the end of this week to practice for their 1 mile, 13 minute (4th grade), and 15 minute (5th grade) runs.  I also want to get them prepared for the Cipriano Run on Oct 23rd, if they decide to participate.

The 4th and 5th graders will learn about the personal/social skill, self control.  I will constantly remind the students using the different ways that they should use self control throughout the marking period.  I will have both grades write in their journals about self control.

These personal/social skills will be used as a main part of the students grade for sportsmanship on their report card.

6th Annual Robert Cipriano Memorial Cross Country Meet

The meet will be Monday, October 23rd at Ford Field Park. The park is located at Cherry Hill and Brady St. in Dearborn.
All students in grades 4th-8th grade can choose to participate in the annual cross country meet.  The cost of participation is $3 per student.

4th and 5th grade elementary students will compete in a timed one-mile race and 6th– 8th grade middle school students will compete in a two-mile race. The first student race will begin at 4:00 pm with each subsequent race starting at approximately 25 minute intervals for middle school and 20 minute intervals for elementary school.

Students and their families are responsible for arranging transportation and supervising their children while they are not competing. Students are to report to the shelter on the north side of the park and check-in with their schools. We will have a brief award ceremony after each race to announce the winning runners and the winning schools. We will all hope for good weather but the rain will not stop us from running. In the event of severe weather (lightning, thunder, heavy rains and/or winds) we may be forced to cancel the event.  In the event of severe weather look to the  Dearborn Athletic Blog for further information  https://athletics.dearbornschools.org. Please make sure they are dressed for the weather. Ford Field is located at Cherry Hill and Brady. We hope to see you there.

4th and 5th Grade Physical Fitness Tests 1st Marking Period

The 4th and 5th grade students will be running almost every class for the first two months of the school year.  Please have students bring the appropriate clothes to wear for cool weather running outside.  We will start by running around the gym for different amounts of time.  We will then go outside and run a 1/2 mile (2 laps) on the track.  The next run will be a 1 mile run (4 laps) on the track.  This will not be a grade on their report card, but I will write down their time as a pre-test for the Presidential Physical Fitness Test at the end of the year.  The final run will be a 13 min run for the 4th graders and a 15 min run for the 5th graders.  The number of laps they complete for these runs will give them their physical fitness grade on their report card for the first marking period.  The standards and grades are listed below.

Soccer Unit K-5th Grade

Starting the last week in September all of my classes will be starting soccer in class.  Each grade will learn at a different pace and learn skills at different ability levels throughout the unit.  There will be main skills that each grade will learn during the unit.  For example, they all will learn the foot dribble, trapping, changing direction, and instep kick.  All classes will play lead-up games that include soccer skills, but the 2nd – 5th graders will play more of a real soccer game to end the unit.  These games will be modified to fit each grade appropriately.  All grade K-5th will be tested on the instep kick to end the unit in different ways to fit their grade.  This skill will be the object control grade for the first marking period.

4th and 5th grade Physical Education

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I would like to welcome you and your child to a new school year!  This year, your child will have two forty-five minute physical education classes per week.  To start this year, I will be implementing a new procedure for gym clothes.  The students in 4th and 5th grade will NOT change their clothes for my class.  The students will only use the locker room if they need to use the restroom during class.  The students will be expected to come to physical education with proper gym shoes.  However, I would highly recommend that the students wear loose fitting clothes on physical education days.  I would also recommend that the students bring a sweatshirt or a jacket on the days that we will be going outside to run.  I want to thank you in advance for your help with implementing this change in procedure.

I have a attached my beginning of the year letter to help explain what students will need to start the year.  I have also attached the heath appraisal form that I need filled out and brought back to me.

Physical Education Class 2017-2018

Hello,

I would like to welcome students and parents to the 2017 – 2018 school year.  I hope that students will have a great experience in Physical Education class this year. We will do a variety of things in my class throughout the school year to help students learn how to stay fit and have fun.

This year I will see the 1st and 2nd grade classes one time a week for forty five minutes and I will see the Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes twice a week for 45 minutes.

The first time I see all of my classes I will spend the majority of time going over the rules and expectations for the year. The next two classes for the lower elementary classes (Kindergarten-3rd grade) I will spend time going over stretches, exercises, red line exercises, and some tagging games that I will play during the year. The next two classes for the upper elementary classes (4th and 5th grade) I will spend time going over stretches, exercises, running, a few games that I will play throughout the school year.

The third week for all classes will consist of starting our soccer unit with all classes. This unit will continue for just over a month.  I will also fit in running during almost every class to get the 4th/5th grade students ready for their 13/15 min run test and the Cipriano Run.   The Cipriano run will be held on Oct 23rd at Ford Field in Dearborn.  There will be more information to follow about the run in the near future.

Thanks,

Frank Haliburda
