“The Secret Truth About Napping”

M-STEP practice packet

#8

😀

SOME hours might have a quiz tomorrow.

You should probably re-read the M-STEP article, “Life in the Food Chain”. (pages 1/2)

If you have any questions about the article, be ready to ask them during bellwork time on Friday (tomorrow).

We started an M-STEP practice packet today.  The article on pages 1 and 2 should have been read and annotated in class.  Some hours have  slightly different homework, so read carefully.

HW:

  • FIRST HOUR – Try question #4 and question #5 in the M-STEP packet.  Use QAR.
  • THIRD HOUR – Try question #1 and question #2 in the M-STEP packet. Use QAR.
  • FOURTH and SIXTH HOURS – Try question #2 and question #4 in the M-STEP packet.  Use QAR.

I collected the HAMLET packet and the “Service Animal Rule” opinion essay packet.  These packets were supposed to be finished during spring break and add up to over 100 points.

The teachers won the basketball game, so I AM allowed to give HW every night this week.

HW:

  • its
  • it’s

On loose leaf, explain the difference and give examples.

HINT: Find its/it’s in your planner on page 6.  If you just copy from your planner, you will not earn full points.  You should give more examples if you would like full points.  Also, it will help if you mark “it” with one color and “it’s” with a different color.

It was the one that had been beneath the stairs. Brindled, patches of hair gone, one ear folded over and the other standing straight and notched from fighting. He didn’t seem to be any particular breed. Just big and rangy, right on the edge of ugly, though I would come to think of him as beautiful. He was Airedale crossed with hound crossed with alligator. Alley dog. Big, tough, mean alley dog. As I watched he spit cloth— it looked like blue jeans—out of his mouth.
  • READ the short selection above from “Dirk the Protector”. Then draw the dog on computer paper.  Your drawing should match the details of the text.
  • You probably started this in class, but you should finish it for HW.  The CW on loose leaf (vocabulary sentences) was due in class.

OPINION ESSAY PARAGRAPH 5 (conclusion)

  • paragraph 5 brings everything full circle, basically restate your opinion and list your reasons/arguments

Here is Mrs. Younes’ example:

The new rule recently established by the ADA limiting the types of animals allowed in public places is greatly beneficial for all.  It ensures a greater degree of safety by preventing unpredictable behavior of wild animals from putting people in harm’s way, creating unnecessary chaos and spreading unhealthy diseases.   People are still granted the right to own whatever animal they deem appropriate in their own homes, however for the sake of public safety, the ADA’s rule in allowing only dogs and miniature horses in public places preserves the rights and well-being of the majority.

OPINION ESSAY PARAGRAPH 4 (third reason for your opinion with small counter)

  • paragraph 4 should be all about how the new rule is healthier and sanitary with a small counter argument that people can still have ANY kind of service animal in the privacy of their own homes

Here is Mrs. Younes’ example:

Everything in life must have boundaries or this world would become a difficult place to live in.  It is imperative that we set limits on the variety of animals permitted to enter public places to avoid creating unhealthy and disruptive environments. Others might argue that their rights are being taken away from them and that they are being discriminated against because of their disability.  This is not the case, as they are still permitted to have any animal they wish in the privacy of their own home.  However, it is also important to consider the health and well-being of the majority when such decisions are made.  Perhaps most concerning is that wild animals may carry various diseases that can be spread to humans in public places (source #3).   It is of utmost importance that the health and safety of the majority be considered when rules and laws are established.

OPINION ESSAY PARAGRAPH 3 (second reason for your opinion)

  • paragraph 3 should be all about how the new rule is good for business owners and will prevent chaos, don’t forget to add that dogs and mini-horses are tame and can be trusted

Read Mrs. Younes’ paragraph 3 below then try your own on loose leaf.  Remember that you should NOT just copy hers.  Use hers as an example and then try to write using your own words.

Allowing a variety of animals in businesses could create a great deal of chaos.  Children and even adults would be tempted to approach a Capuchin monkey or any other strange or wild animal and attempt to pet and touch it, creating a ruckus and perhaps stimulating a larger crowd to surround it. The animals could become loud and noisy and destroy things around them (source #3).  This would be a huge disturbance to business owners and to those patrons who are present.  In addition, an abrupt movement or noise could trigger that wild animal to react unexpectedly and potentially harm someone.  According to the article New Service Animal Rules, “Dogs and miniature horses have been used as pets for hundreds of years. They listen to commands…these animals can be trusted by pet owners and business owners.”  It is in the best interest of both the home and business owners to uphold this new rule.

OPINION ESSAY PARAGRAPH 2 (first reason for your opinion)

  • paragraph 2 should be all about how many types of animals are wild and dangerous

Read Mrs. Younes’ paragraph 2 below then try your own on loose leaf.  Remember that you should NOT just copy hers.  Use hers as an example and then try to write using your own words.

Dogs and miniature horses have been used as service animals for years. According to the author Clare Mishica in the article, “New Service Animal Rules,” dogs and miniature horses are animals that can be trusted in businesses.  Other animals like the Capuchin monkey are considered wild animals, which can pose a threat to others.  As stated in the article, “Monkey Helpers” by Tamra Orr, “It is possible for Capuchin’s to become violent suddenly and this can be a danger to their owners and others.” If these animals are trained specifically for one person and they are allowed in public places with a variety of people that they are not used to, anything can set them off, making them a serious danger. These types of animals need to be restricted to their owners’ homes and not allowed in businesses.

Don’t forget to indent every time you start a new paragraph.
