HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well I am going to cheat.  Kind of.

I AM GOING TO TELL YOU THE ANSWERS!

#6 – A

#7A – D

#7B – C

#8 – D

BUT … I want you to do alllll the other QAR work.  I will be CAREFULLY checking what you underlined in the text for #6 and #8, and I will be checking how you explained why you crossed off the wrong answers.

I messed up! I completely forgot the “Space Travel – Exercise 5” vocab sheet, so I’ll post something for it here on Day 8.

1 – not “concluded” but does start with “c”

2 – https://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sustain (read definition 6)

3 – astronauts starts with the letter _______

4 – see that a/an ? cross out “an” so the answer can’t start with “e” or “a” and talent is something you have naturally without training

5 – the worD after the blank IS “of” so only one word makes sense in the blank – secret clue – look at the letters I bolded

Try 6-10 on your own.

Hmmm. #1 is pretty easy.

#2 is VERY easy.

Let’s work on #3.

Underline “contrast”. (You should know from doing a million VENN diagrams that contrast shows how things are DIFFERENT.)

Cross out “a” – Nothing in the selection about the dogs being in danger.

Cross out “d” – Farmers and ranchers are kind of the same thing.

I don’t think it’s “b”. Environmentalists want to protect the earth.  They are into recycling and reducing pollution, etc.

Underline in text:

(in “Author’s Note” section under picture)

“protects predators such as wolves”, “protect herds from predators”

The words you underline are ALMOST exactly the same as the correct answer, and you do have to underline in two different places: THINK & SEARCH.

Word bubble the following … (unless you’re 100% sure about the meaning of the words)

  • timid (under picture)
  • endangered
  • grizzly
  • account
  • flock
  • grazes
  • sagebrush
  • breed
  • livestock
  • originated
  • primary
  • environment
  • opportunists
  • crops

Continue word bubbling in the “Types of Herding Dogs” and “Socialization Starts” sections.

I am going to take the “NO” side.

  • Restate and give position.
  • Give reason and support with evidence from the text (use one of the NO bullets).
  • Counter argument:
    • On the other hand, some say that chimps SHOULD have human rights because they can use tools and work together (ACTION, 18.) It is true that chimps do some human things, BUT so do a lot of other animals. Are we going to start letting dogs go to public school? Should mice be able to vote for the president of the United States?
  • Restate your position.

Remember … no I or YOU in argumentative writing.  Keep it professional.

QUESTION #6

Underline “idiom” and “blazing new trails” and “means”.

Gonna delete (d) – “the” means the path is nothing new, she already knows it

Gonna delete (b) – idiom means that the words mean something different than literally what they are

So in the text I would only underline “new” and “terrified” and “lost” because the poem pattern tells me that line 16 is the OPPOSITE of line 15.

I’m clearly using context clues from the author: A&M

Hmm. Let’s do question #2.

I think I would underline “two” and “best describe” and “speaker’s character”.

Cross off embarrassed and well-rounded.  She’s not in sports or chess or student government.

Cross off spoiled and shy.  She definitely gets loud and in your face sometimes.

So in the text I would underline “want you there, don’t want you around” in lines 7 and 8.

I would also underline “won’t be examined” and “hate to be ignored” in lines 21 and 22.

(This shows she’s moody and confused in several places.)

The words “moody and confused” aren’t in the text, but there are several clues : A&M

Soooo how I would annotate is:

  • looks like first person POV – circle six “I”‘s in the title and first stanza
  • I wonder if that pic is actually the author (probably not).
  • not sure exactly what “pout” means – bubble cloud that – probably means cry or act like a baby
  • The rhyme pattern looks like lines 2 and 4, 6 and 8, 10 and 12 and so on.
  • Who is she talking to when she says, “I don’t want you around” ?
  • CONNECT – When I was young, I DID try to run away, lol to my granny’s house, I made it like one block then got scared.
  • This girl is conflicted with herself – big time.

(Notice I used periods only when the annotation was a complete sentence.)

Continue annotating on page 30.  Make questions and connections. Cloud bubble words you aren’t sure about. Write short notes about everything you notice.

“Figurative Language”

OK … don’t laugh at me.  My mom likes this song, and it has a few good similes.

I know this is not the whip or the nay-nay or the quan, but please listen to JUST THE FIRST MINUTE and neatly write one of the similies at the bottom of the “Figurative Language” page (under the black diamonds).
