CW and HW FOR 1st hour, 3rd hour, and 4th hour

EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT A GOOD ARTIST YOUR WORK SHOULD STILL BE NEAT AND HIGH QUALITY AND SHOULD SHOW ALL THE DETAILS THAT ARE IN THE TEXT!

Carefully read lines 90-94 in “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto.

On the CW page or on a computer paper, DRAW Victor and Michael as they are eating lunch.

Neatly color your drawing if you want full points.

YOUR DRAWING SHOULD INCLUDE ALL THE DETAILS FROM THE TEXT:

  • tables and chairs (it should look like a cafeteria)
  • VICTOR has the following in front of him: tuna casserole, fruit cocktail, buttered roll, milk.
  • MICHAEL has some kind of food with bites out of it (the text doesn’t say what kind of food).
  • Victor and Michael are sitting.
  • Michael is scowling (to impress the girls).
  • girls walking by (use a thought bubble to show what they are probably thinking)

BELL WORK:

Carefully read the bottom section of page 44 in the ELA Lit book (Latin root “uni”).

Then neatly copy the web on loose leaf.

Then neatly copy the 5 sentences and fill in the blanks with the correct word from the web.

You should DISCUSS answers before writing.

IF YOU HAVE TIME:
Dig deeper for an A+

Visit the website and add at least 2 “uni” words to your web and two sentences that correctly use the new “uni” words.

I was so hungry I could eat a horse.

The turkey was as dry as desert dust.

The rock hard bread rolls were screaming for butter.

I definitely wanted to spill the beans (because my sister had a secret).

The only potato was my brother who was a couch potato.

  • metaphor
  • simile
  • personification
  • hyperbole
  • idiom

HW: match the five sentences with the figurative language bullets

OR (deeper level)

Write your own sentences about your Thanksgiving.  Each sentence should use one of the figurative language bullets.

AND (deepest level)

Add an additional sentence that includes an “oxymoron”.

BTW … The sentences are not true at all.  My mom is an excellent cook.  My family had a great time eating and spending time with each other.  My nephew demolished me in Monopoly.  How was your holiday?

DON’T PANIC!

DON’T WAIT UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT!

Just study a little each day, and you’ll be ready for the test.

FRIDAY NIGHT:

  • Read the story. YES! I know we read it in class, but read it again. Pay special attention to the last two pages.
  • Study your flashcards.  SPELLING COUNTS!

seventh.grade.by.gary.soto

SATURDAY MORNING:

  • Try answering this question: “Will Victor and Teresa become a couple?”
  • USE CER PATTERN! Your evidence should come from page 42.
  • You only need two pieces of evidence from the text and each time you give evidence you MUST include your reasoning.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON:

On a sheet of loose leaf, draw the mountain then label the five parts (exposition, rising action, etc.) Then copy six of the following bullets into the correct part of the mountain. WARNING: A few of the bullets are wrong.  Don’t copy those bullets.

  • Victor makes a complete fool of himself in French class just to impress a girl.
  • Teresa has a kitchen full of big brothers. (This is in the text, BUT it’s not important enough to add to the plot.)
  • At lunch, Victor keeps trying to see Teresa, but she’s never in his view.
  • Victor dashes to the library to get French books.
  • Teresa eats a plum for lunch.
  • Mr. Beuller knows the boy is a fake but doesn’t snitch because he used to do the same thing when he was younger.
  • It’s the first day of school in Fresno, California. Victor has a crush on Teresa.
  • Victor embarrasses himself a couple times (homeroom and English class).
  • Victor and Teresa finally talk; she’s impressed because she thinks he speaks French.

SUNDAY MORNING:

  • Answer this question. Use QAR.

7. Which of the following happened in French class?

A. Victor blurts out his crush’s name.

B. Victor bites himself then whispers something.

C. Teresa plays with her hair.

D. Victor whispers then bites himself.

  • Change the following sentences with IDIOMS to make them TRUE:

EXAMPLE: Victor thinks math is a piece of cake.

SHOULD BE: Teresa thinks math is a piece of cake. (see page 36 in the text)

  1. The students in English class had ants in their pants.
  2. Victor scowled at Belinda and managed to catch her eye.
  3. Victor was pulling the teacher’s leg when he spoke French to the teacher.

EXTRA CREDIT CHALLENGE: Write Victor’s complete school schedule – IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER starting with homeroom.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT:

Play video games.  Eat cake. Relax and sleep well.  Don’t worry about a thing because YOU STUDIED!

HW:

[loose leaf]

Neatly copy the question and all four possible answers.

SKIP LINES!

First, underline important words in the question.

Then, cross off two answers and explain why they are wrong.  You must use two of the bullets for this part.

Finally, circle the correct answer and copy EXACT words from the text to prove that is the correct answer. You must use one of the bullets for this part.

3. (EXPOSITION)When the boys scowl, they see girls look at them. What might the girls be thinking?

A      Wow! That handshake was cool.

B      Um. Those boys look so weird.

C      Ok well. That quivering lip is handsome.

D      Yuck. Picking grapes in 110 degrees is no fun.

  • picking grapes was before school started
  • shaking lips aren’t attractive
  • “they shook hands raza style”
  • “he thought his friend looked pretty strange”

VOCABULARY PRACTICE

On loose leaf, neatly write six NEW sentences (in your own words) that are similar to the six sentences at the bottom of page 35 in the ELA Literature book. (green triangle)

Don’t forget to bold the vocabulary words in your sentences.

You should NOT change the bold words.

CLAIM (we already wrote it in class)

EVIDENCE

After homeroom, Victor tried to talk to Teresa. The text says “His brown face blushed” (Soto, 39).

REASONING

(choose only one)

  • This shows that the first obstacle is that Teresa is a bully.
  • This shows that the first obstacle is Victor doesn’t have much self confidence.
  • This shows that the first obstacle is he “managed to catch her eye”.

HUGE TEST NEXT MONDAY!

“Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto

  • Read the whole story (more than once).
  • Know how to do QAR.
  • Be able to write a CER.
  • Be ready to explain how the events of the story fit on the pyramid of action (the plot mountain).
  • Know all the vocabulary words.
  • IDIOMS.
  • Dig deeper and INFER (using the text).

So a lot of these things we will practice in class, but you also might  have to do some at home.

Keep reading the blog each night for more info!
