CW1: DUE TODAY!!!

We started this a couple of weeks ago.

[on computer printer paper]

Dearborn/Fresno VENN

Draw a VENN diagram. Make sure your circles are large and neat and that you have a large space in the middle part. The circle titles are “Fresno” and “Dearborn”. Write facts in the VENN diagram to compare and contrast the two cities. You must use some of the facts from the ELA LIT book (many facts on page 35), but you will also have to research facts on the internet. You should have 5-7 interesting/important facts in each part of the VENN diagram.

CW2:

We started this a couple of weeks ago.

Complete a sketch sheet for any word from “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto. The only word you cannot choose is “scowl”.

CW3: (NEW TODAY!)

Politely ask for the VISUALIZE directions sheet.

HW FOR 3RD HOUR, 4TH HOUR, AND 6TH HOUR

Look over the EXERCISE 96 paper and find at least 10 matches.

Neatly write the 10 (or more) matching pairs into your composition book page #6.

EXTRA POINT: Also write a short story that uses some of the matching words.

exercise.96

HW:

1 – PICTURE DAY TOMORROW!

2 – FOURTH HOUR HOMEWORK: Read your library book for 20 minutes – write your start time and stop time on a piece of loose leaf. On the same loose leaf, write a summary about what you read (at least one strong paragraph). You must get a parent signature on the bottom of the loose leaf.

STAY IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEATS THE WHOLE HOUR AND KEEP ALL CONVERSATIONS TO AT WHISPER LEVEL. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO WORK WITH A PARTNER, YOU MAY RAISE YOUR HAND AND ASK PERMISSION.

B-W: Politely ask for the B-W directions then get started. The B-W should take you 10-15 minutes MAXIMUM.

CW1:

On a sheet of loose leaf make two columns.  The left column title is “QUOTE FROM TEXT”. The right column title is “WHAT IT REALLY MEANS”. There is an example of how to set up your loose on the chalkboard.

Slowly and carefully read page 41 of “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto. Read the whole page BEFORE you write any answers on your loose leaf. Then go back and add 5-7 answers on your loose leaf.

HERE’S AN EXAMPLE FOR #1:

QUOTE: “The bell rang, and Mr. Bueller wiped his hands, turned to the class, and said, ‘Bonjour.’ ”

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS: Victor’s school doesn’t have to do B-W.

CW2: Ask for QAR practice questions.

SIXTH HOUR ONLY:

From 2:23-2:24 you may talk as loudly as you want.

At 2:35 … you must stop whatever you’re doing and SILENTLY read your library book for 10 minutes. If you don’t have your library book, you should SILENTLY work on MobyMax for 15 minutes.

EXCEPTION: If your mountain quiz score was 28, 29 or 30 you may have SILENT free time.

BW:

Find the following in the “healthier school meals” article then neatly highlight:

  • “Her goal is to make our kids healthier and happier.”
  • “There is nothing in the law that prevents bake sales or birthday cakes in the classroom.”
  • “Eventually, they come to enjoy them.”
  • “some of her comments put down school nutrition professionals.”
  • “taken money away from teacher pay to cover extra costs.”
  • “The meal standards aren’t fit for our students. They need to be scrapped.”

HW:

DESTROY OMO!

Be creative. 🙂

Make sure some of the OMO words are still legible (showing).

Starting today … BRING YOUR LIBRARY BOOK EVERY TIME YOU COME TO ELA CLASS. You should also bring all your other supplies every day (there are 8).

BW: Skim over the article of the week, “healthier school meals”, and find 4 vocabulary words you think will be important to understanding the article.

CW1: Work on your RAZA handshake.

CW2: Work on Fresno/Dearborn VENN.

CW3: Work on word sketch sheet – the word CANNOT be “scowl”.

If you’re done with everything, quietly read or work on MobyMax or choose something quiet and EDUCATIONAL to work on.

HW:

TOMORROW IS HAT DAY!

(Bring at least $1 to help kids with cancer and you will be allowed to wear your hat.)

LIBRARY DAY – EASY 10 POINTS!

  • I WILL BE WATCHING WITH EAGLE EYES – excellent students could earn several polar points.
  • Walk quietly to and from the library.
  • Stay serious at all times.
  • Pay attention while Mrs. Navarre is teaching the lesson and be on your best behavior. Do not blurt answers. Raise your hand and WAIT if she asks questions.
  • Library conversations should be whisper level.
  • Choose a good fit book that is not too hard or too easy for you. The book should be close to your LEXILE level.
  • After you check out a book, find a place to read then READ.
  • You must take ONE genre bookmark and keep it until the very end of seventh grade.
  • I will be randomly testing students to ask them to read to me or to ask them questions to see if they are really reading.
  • When we get back to class … GET COMFORTABLE … you may take off your shoes, but you don’t have to. Read silently for 5 minutes.

FIRST HOUR HW:

You must NEATLY write the matching words next to each other on loose leaf.

exercise.96

HW:

Bring your Lowrey ID card (from 6th grade). Actually, I think even your card from 4th grade or 2nd grade would work.

OR

Create a VERY realistic student ID card on a flash card. Your ID number must be large and neat.

ID.card.sample

FOR FULL POINTS:

  • Sit alone. Work independently (alone).
  • All answers must be from memory.
  • Answer the top part of the quiz.
  • On the BACK of the quiz, do NOT draw a mountain. Draw something that has a similar shape. Label each part of your shape and write the definitions (BOTH bullets exactly like the ELA book or in your own words).
  • PLEASE BE NEAT!
  • AFTER YOU HAVE LABELED AND WRITTEN THE DEFINITIONS … then add a small amount of neat color.
  • On a piece of loose leaf, write one sentence IN YOUR OWN WORDS that follows this structure: “They ran into their uncle, Hassan Beydoun, by the Walmart that never closed.”
  • Staple the quiz and the loose leaf together and turn it upside down on your table.
  • REMAIN QUIET AS LONG AS OTHER STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON THE QUIZ.

ONE MORE CHANCE TO SKIP THE QUIZ: Start the quiz. Work for 5 minutes. Then drop a folded mini scrap with your name on it into the green bucket. The teacher will pick one name.  The student will go into the hallway, and the teacher will ask a few questions. The student must SPEAK the answers. If the answers are correct, the student will not have to finish the quiz and will still earn full points.
