Valentine’s Box

Please remember to send in some sort of empty box for Valentine’s Day. You may send in a cereal box, shoe box, Kleenex box, etc. We will decorate these boxes in class.

If you would like to send in Valentine cards for the children, please remember that we have 24 children in our class. Please leave the “To:” blank and have your child write their name in the “From:” spot.

You can see more information about Valentine’s day in an earlier post which I have linked here for your convenience:

Agenda for the Week

Reading & Writing:  This week we continued working on our reading and writing. We are still focusing on middle sounds and practicing stretching out our words to hear each sound. We worked in our new reading groups this week and focused on sight words, voice inflection, comprehension, and reading accurately.

Please continue to have your child practice writing sentences at home by pretending they are holding an imaginary rubberband and stretching it as they slowly say the word they are trying to spell.

Math: We are still working hard to learn about number bonds! We continue to practice story problems and are working on identifying groups (sets, or parts) and finding the whole (how many we have all together).

Science: We continue talking about polar habitats and the animals which live there. We are learning about different animals who live in the cold and how they are able to survive in this habitat.

Social Studies:  We are going to begin learning about maps!

Housekeeping Items:

Indoor Lineup

Indoor lineup is now at the 5th grade doors. Remember, even during indoor lineup, no parents are allowed in the building unless you have signed in at the front office.

Winter Apparel

Please practice putting on and taking off coats, boots, shoes, scarves, gloves, etc. As well as buttoning/zipping coats and tying their own shoes. Your child should be able to do all of these things independently!

Folders

Please make sure to empty the folder each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Please be sure to send the folder to school each day. It is a big part of our arrival and dismissal routines and the folders help the children keep all of their papers organized.

No School for Kindergarten Tomorrow!!!

Reminder:

No school for Kindergarten or Young 5’s only tomorrow, February, 7th, 2020.

100th day T-Shirt

Reminder:

Tomorrow is the 100th day of school. The children should wear their t-shirt with either the number 100 or 100 items. We will share these shirts in class with one another. I know many of the children have already made their shirts and are very excited about sharing. If you were not able to make a shirt with your child, please send them to school tomorrow in a white shirt or a bright colored shirt so they can glow under the lights! Tomorrow is our 100th day celebration and we will be having GLOW activities all day long!

Agenda for the Week

Reading & Writing:  This week we began our writing journals for “work on writing” during Daily 5. The kids are excited about their journals and are pushing themselves to write more than one sentence. I gave each child a topic sheet to help them think of things to write about. I also encouarge them to use their imaginations and make up animals or habitats which only exist in their minds. They think this is super fun and together in class as a whole group we created a horsiphant. This is an elephant and a horse combined!

Please continue to have your child practice writing sentences at home by pretending they are holding an imaginary rubberband and stretching it as they slowly say the word they are trying to spell.

Math: We are working hard to learn about number bonds! The children are pretty good at identifying the parts of the number bond (part, part, whole), but some are still having some difficulty. The children are understanding the part plus the other part equals the whole, but it much more difficult for them when they are given the whole and have to break it apart into two numbers.

Science: We continue talking about polar habitats and the animals which live there. We are learning about different animals who live in the cold and how they are able to survive in this habitat. This week we focused on penguins!

Social Studies:  We are still discussing the concepts of past, present, and future.

Valentine’s Day Activities

For Valentine’s day the class will be decorating a box and a cookie. One of our mom’s has kindly agreed to bake some delicious cookies for the children to decorate with frosting and other goodies for the occasion!

I am asking each family to send your child to school with some kind of box to decorate! It could be a shoe box, and empty cereal box, an empty Kleenex box, etc. We will decorate this box during the day with materials provided here at school! After the boxes are completed, the children who bring Valentine’s, will have an opportunity to pass them out.

If you would like to send in Valentine’s with your child to pass out to the class, please be aware of the following:

  1. Valentine’s should be prepared at home with the “To:” left blank and the “From:” filled in with your child’s name. It takes far too long for your child to try to read each child’s name and pass it out to them, which is why I ask that you leave the “To:” blank.
  1. There are 24 students in class. Please make sure to send one valentine for each child!
  1. Please do not create boy valentine’s and girl valentine’s as it complicates the process of passing all of them out!

Thank you for your assistance in helping our Valentine activities run smoothly!

Nut Allergy Alert!!!

We have a new student in class who is allergic to peanuts. We are now a nut free classroom. Please be mindful of this when packing a snack for your child.

It is still fine for your child to bring items with nuts during lunchtime as we have a special designated “nut free” table.

Thank you for helping to keep all children safe in our classroom!

100th Day White T-Shirt Project!

Dear Families,

The 100th day of school is soon approaching for our kindergarten students!  How awesome is that? To celebrate this amazing accomplishment of being 100 days smarter, we are asking parents to decorate a white t-shirt at home with your child. The t-shirt should have 100 items or represent the number 100 in some way. You may do this with puffy paint, glow-in-dark paint, by sewing on felt, using fabric glue to adhere items, etc. Get creative! Please complete this t-shirt at home and send your child to school wearing the t-shirt on the 100th day of school, which is, Thursday, February 6th!  We cannot wait to see all the t-shirt designs! Students will participate in a 100th day t-shirt fashion show to share and celebrate their white shirts with the class!
