Transitional Life Skills Class

  • Each day we begin class with dressing ourselves independently (the girls are changing into their street clothes after gym; and the boys are working on changing into their gym clothes.) This is a skill that your students need to become independent in in order to help them live a more successfully independent life now and in the future. We encourage that you continue to work with this at home as well and encourage your child to do as many personal care items for themselves as possible. After they have finished changing, if time allows we will work on the following themes each day.

Transitional Social Skills is a new elective class this year for students to learn how to become more independent. We will be cooking, shopping, washing clothes, cleaning, and so much more in this class!

Class Requirement: If each student brings in $2.00 each week we will be able to keep the cooking learning experiences going.

Monday – Recipe for cooking manipulation: identifying tools and ingredients needed to complete the recipe, putting steps into correct order, and practice with measuring ingredients correctly.

This is just one example of the several different activities we do to help the students with measurement.  IMG_0189

Tuesday – Art project

Wednesday – Work jobs: these are specific skill building boxes that focus on various tasks to improve skills that can one day help students with employment. These skills being built include counting, packaging, number/letter matching, shape/picture matching, color matching, following correct order, and MANY more!

Here are some videos and/or pictures of examples of the work jobs that we do during this hour. These jobs help the students with future employment skills.

Thursday – Mrs. Nasser’s (school social worker) lesson on building friends/peer relationships, dealing with our feelings appropriately, and communication.

*Community Based Instruction: Shopping in the morning on Thursdays. Ms. Poloni and Mrs. Bittars’ caseloads alternate shopping and staying behind every other week because there is not enough room on the bus for all of us to go. We go to stores up on the hill including Meijer, Target, Five Below, Barnes and Nobel, Michael’s, and more! During the two hours we have shopping we have students practice navigating around the store to locate specific items, finding/comparing prices, using a price check, asking for help from a worker when needed, and counting out money to pay for a transaction. We always purchase the ingredients needed for cooking that week as well. This is why the $2.00 donation is much needed every week.

Friday – Cooking Day!
