  2. imperialism: When one country rules other countries
  3. Colony: a country that is controlled by another country
  4. Icebox: a very cold place
  5. Gold rush: when many people run to a place to find gold
  6. Natural Resource: important things that are found in nature
  7. Contiguous: the 48 states that share a border
  8. Island: land that is surrounded by water on all sides
  9. Peninsula: land that is surrounded by water on three sides
  10. Church: a place where Christians pray
  11. Battleship: a ship used during war
  12. blew up: exploded
  13. independent: free and not controlled by another country
  14. nation: country
  15. surrendered: give up
  16. captured: to take over and control
  17. border: the edge of a country
  18. silly: not smart
  19. discover: to find something for the first time
  20. missionary: a person who spreads the message of Christianity

  2. Homestead Act: a law that gave settlers land on the Great Plains for a low price
  3. drought: a long time with no rain
  4. famine: a long time with no food

  6. Locust: insects that eat your crops
  7. weapons: things used to hurt and protect people
  8. settlers: people who lived in the Great Plains
  9. reservations: Places for the Native Americans to live
  10. expand: to become larger
  11. immigrants: people who leave their country and live in a new country

  13. connect: to bring two things together

1. Reconstruction: the time after the Civil War when the country was being rebuilt.

2. Rejoin: join again or be a part of

3. unemployed: does not have a job

7. representative: a person who works in the government and represents the citizens.

8. amendment: a law that is added to the Constitution.

9. Constitution: the laws of a country.

10. 13th amendment: slavery was abolished and it became illegal.

11. 14th amendment: all African Americans are citizens and have equal rights.

12. 15th amendment: African American men can vote.
