Hi, everyone…I made a daily schedule of when I will be posting art assignments. I know you have a lot on your plate so I thought this might help! The students have a whole week to do their assignment, it is due by the next time I post for the grade- which means 7 days. Please let me know what they did or send a photo through dojo or my email( please include your teachers name):
Hi, how about working with the rainbow today? The warmer weather is inspiring and make me think COLOR!
Fun and colorful, right?
Let’s start: you need a paper and a pencil to sketch the box. You want to draw lightly with the pencil in case you make a mistake- it will be easier to erase. Near the bottom of the paper you need to draw a rectangle. On top of the rectangle you want to add another one that will act as the flap on the front side. Use the top of your rectangle as the top of the flap and draw the bottom of the flap a few inches down onto your rectangle- a horizontal line that is slightly longer. Now connect the line you just made to the top corners of your rectangle and you should have what looks like a flap! You can add a flap on each side to give your box dimension. To do this draw two lines that are parallel- the one at the front of the box is a bit longer that the one farther back. Connect them and you have flaps that make your box look like you could put something in it….like a rainbow!
Now for the fun- add your rainbow- it can be in lines, splashes, zigzags, bubbles, shapes, etc.. You have to remember to use the right order of the colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple. You can start with red or purple- but the order has to be the same- go forward or backward.
Please share your pictures with me, I would LOVE to see them!

Yesterday we did ASD and the Young Fives, so today is:
First Grades: paper Masks
You can use scrap paper, newspaper, drawing paper, construction paper, paper plates……anything around the house that you want to add for details! Have fun!!! Share your mask with me. Here are some examples for inspiration….
Don’t forget to share what you made with me so I can give you credit on the grading sheets! zecharj@dearbornschools.org
Second Grade: Castles
Here are two examples of making castles/fancy dwellings. Try combining the two to make your own castle! Customize it to make it look the way you want. The directions can easily be combined and with YOUR imagination- the sky is the limit! Have fun designing and coloring! Please make sure you share with me on dojo or through my email: zecharj@dearbornschools.org
I hope you have fun making art! Remember that I need to see your work by next Tuesday, May 5. I will post a new assignment for you then.
As always- make sure you are doing all of your schoolwork, teachers are grading again, get outside in the sunshine, help out your family around the house and Be Kind!
I made changes to my art blog: starting today I am going to post an assignment every day for a DIFFERENT grade level as follows:
Mondays: ASD/Young 5 AND Kindergarten
Tuesdays: First and Second Grades
Wednesdays: Third Grade
Thursdays: Fourth Grade
Fridays: Fifth Grade
All assignments will be due on the next day that you have and assignment posted- so everyone has one week to complete their work and send it in dojo or email it to me!!!
I have been talking to other teachers and I know everyone is overwhelmed. Maybe the one assignment per week idea will be easier to accomplishment. You can let me know what you think……
So…. For ASD Students AND students in the Young 5 Program:
Elmo and Cookie Monster! Have someone trace your hand for you!!!
You can watch the video for directions BUT you will need someone to trace your hand! If you don’t have the right colored paper you can color a piece of white paper to get the colors you need!!!! Have fun, don’t forget to share in dojo or through my email- include your name so I can give you credit on the grading sheets!
You will need two pieces of paper, one does not need to be too big. On the small sheet, use crayons and make some colorful scribbles. Add eyes and arms and legs. On the other paper create a place, or environment or scene that you can cut out your scribbles and glue them into. Now, you could either write a story or show someone your art and tell them the story that you made up using your scribbles and the setting you chose! Have fun and please share so I can mark it off on the grading sheet! Use your class dojo or email me: zecharj@dearbornschools.org
Thanks! Hope you have some fun with your art assignments. Please remember to share your art with me!
As always- make sure you are doing all of your schoolwork- teachers have to grade what you are doing!!!! Get outside for some fresh air, be helpful at home and Be Kind!!!!
Since our school buildings closed on Friday, March 13th there have been thousands of positive interactions between students and teachers via phone, e-mail, and on-line. This is why I am so deeply troubled and concerned about a few individuals who have taken advantage of our new school environment, made poor choices, and become disruptive to the learning process.
These disruptions occurred at the middle school level while teachers were trying to provide instruction to students during a Google Meeting. Unfortunately, these disruptions crossed a line and became threatening and obscene. It has also been discovered that, in some cases, students willingly gave their user information and password to these individuals allowing them to gain access to the meetings. Students are responsible to protect the confidentiality of their district issued accounts and passwords. It is a direct violation of district guidelines and protocol to share passwords with anyone and we will not tolerate those violations as we ensure the security of our network in order to protect our students.
The behaviors that these students exhibited are not acceptable at any time but especially now, as we all deal with a worldwide crisis, the district will not permit this type of disruption to learning. It is our responsibility to protect instruction and we will be enforcing every disciplinary action allowed by our Student Code of Conduct. For those individuals who violated the law, we will involve the Dearborn Police to issue tickets, and if needed, take further and more serious legal action.
Although teachers and students have been safely using Google Meetings, I asked our Instructional Technology Department to temporarily suspend all student access to Google Meeting on the District network. We are also working to have staff use a platform for on-line meetings that has been used in the District for several years and is specifically developed for use in the classroom. The software gives teachers more control over a meeting including ending if someone attempts to gain access without permission.
I proudly started my career as a teacher and, like many of you, my wife and I are also adjusting to working at home and supporting the learning needs of one middle school and one high school aged child. The actions that took place this week disrespects the efforts that all of you are doing to support your child’s education. As Superintendent, and as a father, I am sorry this occurred and apologize to the students who were the victims of these behaviors.
Just as my wife and I have taken an active role in our own children’s learning and on-line activities, I ask all parents to use this experience as an opportunity to talk with your child about proper behaviors while on-line including protecting your personal information such as usernames and passwords.
Since March 16th, I have heard many encouraging stories of student learning taking place at all grade levels. This past week has been a shift for all of us as we transitioned to the new learning plan. Of course there has been a learning curve for everyone involved including staff, students, and parents. We understand this transition to “Continue the Learning” is going to create frustrations and questions. Please know that our teachers, principals, and administrators are here to help all of our families during the weeks ahead. Our continued goal is to be supportive during this very difficult time. Remember, we are all in this together and together we will become an even stronger Dearborn community.
Stay home. Stay safe. Save lives.
Regards,
Glenn Maleyko, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Hi, everyone. Just continue working on your comic strips or comic books by adding color. Colored pencil is great if you have it, crayon or marker, too. If you use marker remember not to drag your hand as you are coloring AND it will most likely bleed through your page.
If you made a comic strip and you finished coloring, you are good to go- send me a picture!
If you made a comic book you have some choices: you can out the pages back to back with a glue stick so you have images on the front and back as you turn the page, or you can just put them in order and have the artwork on just one side of each page- both ways work fine!
To make a binding you can glue them together at the left hand edge- all the way down from the edge in, you can staple them together, you can paper clip them together- whatever you have on hand and whatever works best for you. Please send me a picutre!
Here are some student examples that are drawn and colored…..
Hope you had fun making the comic!! As always, make sure you are doing your schoolwork- we all have to grade students this last card marking period so do your work and get it to your teachers, get outside- “they” say we are supposed to have a nice afternoon today. Please help out around the house and Be Kind!
Keep working on your comic book pages. Remember to draw neatly and add detail! Take your time. We start adding color tomorrow and have the weekend to finish it! Hang in there, you will feel so accomplished when you are done!
Here is a little video about a cat, of course!!!, for a bit of entertainment….
Keep working on your comic book and check back tomorrow!
Make sure you are doing all of your schoolwork- we are back to grading what you are doing, get outside for a few minutes, be helpful at home and Be Kind!
As you know the Dearborn Public Schools are back in session- although remotely!! We are grading students on their work and students will receive a grade for ART on the fourth quarter report card. To make sure you are doing your work and getting credit for it TOWARD your ART grade, you need to communicate with me that you have done it!!! A photo sent to my email or in the comment section on the blog will work. Please make every effort to share with me so that I know how to grade you for the fourth quarter.
The grading for the fourth quarter is as follows:
Elementary Grading Criteria – COVID-19 School Shutdown
For the current marking period:
Students receive feedback on weekly assignments in the form of narrative comments.
Meeting: regularly submitted work and attended check-ins
Accuracy of work assessed on standards/graded/recorded in MiStar
High participation
Progressing: Submitted most assignments and attended some of the check-ins
Limited Participation: with one of the following explanations
Rarely or did not submit work (may be required to attend summer school)
Rarely attended check-in sessions (may be required to attend summer school)
hardship during the time of instruction (summer support offered)
Hope all is well at home, I am ready for some nice spring weather. I have been riding my bike but with the wind it is pretty chilly! I want sunshine and warmer weather!!!!😊❤
I have given you three templates to start making your REAL comic book. You can stay with one or you can use all three. Comic book pages are not always the same format. Decide which one will be your first page and lets get started! In the first box you will write the title of the comic and your by line. They usually have an image, too- maybe the main character(s). In each of the boxes you will add one scene. You can have a few words across the top, or the character could have a talk bubble, or it could be just image. You want to do this with pencil or pen. Take your time and do a good job in each box. Depending on how long your story is you might want to do some boxes and then take a break and come back to it. I am thinking this could take a few days because I know you have other school work to do. Be neat, it will pay off when you color.
An example of the black and white- this one has a lot of black detailing which makes it pretty interesting, but just your scene will work. This comic book artist has his own very cool style.Another page- again, it is very stylized -looks great and this is a lot of work! You can develop your own style….Fun speech bubbles and ideas…….
For your first comic book you can keep it pretty simple and you can see from these pages, it can turn into something that is totally YOU!
As always- do ALL of your school work, we are grading your work again!!! Get outside today for awhile, be helpful around the house and Be Kind! See you tomorrow!
