Summer Activity Calendar

Wow! I cannot believe summer is already here! Thank you all again for a wonderful school year! These times were quite uncertain, however, we pulled through and helped the children continue learning at home.

Learning does not have to stop in the summer! To help your child prepare for Kindergarten or Young 5’s, check out the attached Summer Activity Calendar, created by Jac Ward. Each day provides you with learning activities you can do with your child for a few minutes a day.

A Note from Ms. Thompson

Hello and happy Monday! Wow… I cannot believe it is the end of the school year. What a crazy year it has been! We all took on new and unexpected challenges during these uncertain times.

As I reflect on this year, I think about and appreciate the positives. In December 2019, I graduated from University of Michigan-Dearborn with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education, along with my teaching certifications. I became part of the Cotter and Salina family shortly after and began teaching my first class. I remember feeling excited to meet and work with your child! Each and every student brought a unique personality that strengthened our classroom community. Before we knew it, we took our learning to a remote basis. You became a key part in your child’s learning development. And for that, I thank you! Without your cooperation and support, none of this would be possible. I thank you for the phone calls, pictures, and Remind messages. It was wonderful to see and hear the progress your child made during this time.

I enjoyed being your child’s teacher this year, and I wish them the best of luck as they continue their academic development! Have a wonderful summer!

Literacy Activity

What will you do this summer vacation? Encourage your child to write about what they are going to do this summer. Here are the directions for the activity:

  1. Encourage your child to draw all the activities they want to do this summer.
  2. Encourage them to write each activity they are going to do (it is okay if they need help with their writing).
  3. Send a picture to Ms. Thompson on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org

Math Activity

How high can you count? Although we only practiced counting from 1-20, it is always a good idea to practice counting over the summer. Here is a Jack Hartmann video about counting to 100:

I encourage your child to exercise and count with this video at least once a day!

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Fun Work Time Activity: Play Simon Says!
Simon Says is a great listening game! Here are the directions to the game:

  1. Pick one person to be “Simon.”
  2. The person who is Simon says, “Simon says…” and then gives a direction. (For example, “Simon says jump!”)
  3. The person who is not Simon performs the action.
  4. If Simon DOES NOT say, “Simon says…” before the action, the other person DOES NOT do the action. (For example, if Simon says, “Stop jumping,” the other person should not listen to the direction because Simon didn’t say.)

Here are some ideas you can use for the game:

Outdoor Exploration

Today will be a beautiful day! I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. As a reminder, the Dearborn Public Schools playground equipment and sports fields are closed. This is a great day to go for a walk or play in the yard!

Literacy Activity

We finished learning the alphabet! Today, let’s go for a letter hunt! How many letters can your child find?

All you need for this activity is a book, magazine, OR newspaper. Encourage your child to look through the pages and identify letters. When your child finds a letter, ask them what sound it makes.

Here is a fun Sesame Street video about the alphabet for extra review:

Math Activity

Today, I encourage your child to practice seriation. Seriation means to organize objects by size. Seriation is important for early childhood development because it helps children observe and analyze objects’ sizes and use their problem-solving skills to arrange them. This can later be applied to numerical sizes (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). For more information about seriation in preschool, please see the following blog posts:

Here are the directions for this ativity:

  1. Watch my video about seriation: CLICK HERE

Literacy Activity

Last week, we finished learning the alphabet! Today, encourage your child to practice writing their capital (upper case) and lower case letters. Here are some ideas as to how they can practice writing:

Shaving Cream and Q-tips
Writing in shaving cream is a great way to encourage your child to write because it is fun and attention-grabbing! All you need for this is shaving cream, a Q-tip, and a tray to write on.

Chalk
We may be expecting storms today. However, if the weather clears up, writing with chalk on side walk is a fun and engaging way to encourage your child to write the alphabet!

Paper and Crayons
Your child can simply write the alphabet with crayons and paper. Will they write the alphabet with the same color? Different colors? Make a pattern with the colors?

Send me pictures of your child’s writing on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org

Math Activity

We finished learning the teen numbers! The next number after the teen numbers is 20.

For today’s activity, I encourage your child to count from 1 to 20. Here is a Jack Hartmann video your child can count with:

Literacy Activity

Since the first day of summer is in June, let’s write about our favorite things to do in the summer! Encourage your child to write this sentence, “I like to _______________.” Here is my writing:

You may have to help your child write their words. This is okay! Please send me pictures of your child’s writing on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org.

Math Activity

Today, we are going to do a measuring activity! For our activity, we are going to measure how tall we are. All you need is something you can measure your child with (preferably items that are the same size). Here are some ideas:

  • Toys
  • Blocks
  • Socks
  • Forks
  • Spoons

Here are the directions for the activity:

  1. Encourage your child to lay down on the floor.
  2. Line up the items you chose to measure your child until they are the same height as your child.
  3. Encourage your child to count the items in the line.
  4. Ask your child, “How tall are you?” (They should say the number of items that are in the line.)
  5. Repeat steps 1-4, but let your child measure you.

Fun Work Time Activity: Pretend to be a Doctor!
Dramatic play is extremely critical for a child’s development. Dramatic play allows children to develop communication skills authentically. It also allows children to explore their interests an imagination.
Prior to the school closure, the students developed an interest in our class doctor’s kit. They enjoyed taking care of the baby dolls, as well as their friends. Today, I encourage you and your child to pretend to be doctors and take care of your family members, dolls, toys, etc.!

Outdoor Exploration

Today will be a beautiful day! I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. As a reminder, the Dearborn Public Schools playground equipment and sports fields are closed. This is a great day to go for a walk or play in the yard!
