Literacy Activity

We finished learning the alphabet! Today, let’s go for a letter hunt! How many letters can your child find?

All you need for this activity is a book, magazine, OR newspaper. Encourage your child to look through the pages and identify letters. When your child finds a letter, ask them what sound it makes.

Here is a fun Sesame Street video about the alphabet for extra review:

Math Activity

Today, I encourage your child to practice seriation. Seriation means to organize objects by size. Seriation is important for early childhood development because it helps children observe and analyze objects’ sizes and use their problem-solving skills to arrange them. This can later be applied to numerical sizes (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). For more information about seriation in preschool, please see the following blog posts:

Here are the directions for this ativity:

  1. Watch my video about seriation: CLICK HERE
  2. Find items in your house your child can organize from tallest to shortest (examples: toys, rocks, coins, sticks, etc.).
  3. Send pictures of your child’s seriation to me on Remind or email: thompsl@dearbornschools.org

Work Time

I encourage your child to engage in imaginary play for at least 60 minutes a day. To keep the consistency with what we do at school, I encourage you to follow the Plan, Do, Review process. Here is the Work Time process:

  • Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.
  • Work Time (45-60 minutes): Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.
  • Clean Up: When Work Time is over, encourage your child to clean up the area(s) they played in.
  • Recall (5-10 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Fun Work Time Activity: Build Castles with Blocks or Lego’s
The children love to build at school! Their favorite items to build with are blocks and/or Lego’s. I encourage you to build different castles with your child. Will they be big? Will they be long? Will they be small? You decide!

Outdoor Exploration

Today will be a beautiful day! I encourage you and your child to go outside for 60 minutes today. As a reminder, the Dearborn Public Schools playground equipment and sports fields are closed. This is a great day to go for a walk or play in the yard!
