Summer Book Club

What did you do this summer?  Dearborn Public School students and figure skating friends, spent the summer reading the book “Pie” by Sarah Weeks.  As a culminating activity, the girls learned how to bake cherry pies and chocolate chess pies.  Both pies were inspired by recipes from the book.  The best part, these girls represent multiple schools from Dearborn.  The young scholars and bakers who participated were:  Jillian and Bella from Bryant, Olivia from O.L. Smith, Olivia from Dearborn HS and Molly from Whitmore Bolles.  Parent, Robbyn Makled and teacher/parent Deena Furlow facilitated this summer learning.

Fordson Vocal Students Take Center Stage

On August 2nd, members of Fordson’s choirs joined Choir Director, Matt Laura, at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Summer Workshop in Lansing. They led a session entitled “Beyond the Canon: Programming Arab Music.”  The purpose of the session was to demystify and highlight Arab musical and cultural inclusion in a choral program.

Director Laura and students collaborated with Michael Ibrahim, the founder and director of the National Arab Orchestra, to introduce Arab music and culture.   Students even taught a song to the music teachers in attendance.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive; the students were treated like celebrities;  and were praised for “trailblazing” a new music connection.   Above all else, they laid the groundwork for collaborations with high schools and universities throughout Michigan.  Shared by Matt Laura

Lindbergh Leader in Me Day

I had the privilege of spending the morning of June 6th at Lindbergh Elementary.  Students shared their role in leadership, a choir performance, jump rope championship team, and a recorder performance.  Visiting classrooms was also exciting as students shared classroom leadership roles and leadership binders.  There are great things happening at Lindbergh!  Go Lindbergh Flyers!

Mr. Oshnock’s Opus

DHS Instrumental Music Director, Jeffrey Oshnock, conducted his final concert as he is retiring this June.  On, May 24th, at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, over 75 alumni returned to perform with Mr. Oshnock one last time.  The evening began with the alumni band playing two patriotic tunes. The 9th-12th grade bands and orchestras played 2-3 songs each. The orchestra’s version of “Phantom of the Opera” was truly moving.  At the end of the evening, 5 alumni came back on stage and performed with the DHS Jazz Band. This was an outstanding tribute to a teacher who has dedicated 32 years to Dearborn students.
