Checking Out Chromebooks

Lowrey School will be distributing Chromebooks to families in order to support their child’s remote Learning. Each Chromebook was checked and cleaned by admin and personnel to ensure that they are safe to be used. Please note that chromebooks need a working internet connection.   If your family does not have a working computer and is in need of a chromebook then please come to Lowrey’s main doors, tomorrow Thursday March 19th between times of 11:30am to 3pm.
 One chromebook per household!

All parents will need to sign a consent form to insure chromebooks will be returned in the same condition they were given. All parents and students are responsible for the chromebooks. They must be returned once students return to school.

Free Breakfast and Lunch

Dearborn Schools offering free breakfast and lunch pickup for students at six sites

Dearborn Public Schools is offering free pickup lunch and breakfast for students while school is closed for the mandatory shut down over the next three weeks.

Families will be able to stop in and pick up a bag with both breakfast and lunch for each child in the family.  Pickups will run daily from 10 a.m. to noon starting tomorrow, March 17 at Fordson, Edsel Ford and Dearborn high schools, McCollough-Unis, Salina Intermediate, and Woodworth Middle School.

Signage at each site will direct parents and students where to enter the building. Food will be near entrances to minimize the amount of time community members spend in the facilities.

Please note, meals are available to anyone age 18 and younger.  Students do not need to be present, and the Dearborn School student does not need to attend at that building.  A designated person can collect meals for multiple children.  Meals for Saturday and Sunday can be picked up on Friday.

The program will allow the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food.  Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week ordered all Michigan schools closed from March 16 through April 3 to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and cases of COVID-19.  Dearborn Schools is scheduled for spring break April 6 to 10, so school will not resume in the District until April 13.

The grab-and-go meals will be served at least through April 3.

Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the District’s food service team for quickly implementing this drastic change in service to meet the needs of families.

“We appreciate the patience of our families and community as we all try to adjust to this sudden change from closing schools,” Dr. Maleyko said.  “More than three quarters of our students qualify for free or reduced priced school meals.  We realize this food is important to our families, many of whom may be facing additional financial hardships from the sudden economic changes related to COVID-19.”

Check the Dearborn Public Schools website at www.dearbornschools.org for any updates or changes to the meal program or for other issues regarding the school closure.

Digital Learning

Dear First Grade Families,

Over the next three weeks, we will be assigning work and monitoring learning on the following websites:

www.kidsa-z.com (RazKids)

www.zearn.org

Please make sure your child is logging on to these websites EVERY day.  Students are required to:

*Read at least 1 book from the “level up” section on Raz Kids each day.  They will listen to the story, read it themselves, and then answer questions to complete the assignment.  That means that they will complete at least 5 books each week.

*Complete a minimum of FOUR math lessons each week on Zearn.  Each lesson takes approximately 20-30 minutes. The first math module is on Shapes.

If you do not have reliable internet access or a computer, Comcast is offering free internet for 90 days.  They are also offering a deal to buy a computer for $99 for all students in the Dearborn Public School District.  We encourage all families to help one another to access the internet so that all students are able to continue their learning online.

If you need your child’s username or password for their Raz Kids and Zearn accounts, please contact your child’s teacher via email.

Mrs. Stanford: stanfoa@dearbornschools.org

Mrs. Alawy: alawym@dearbornschools.org

Mrs. Shell: shelld@dearbornschools.org

Mrs. Neuenschwander: neuensb@dearbornschools.org

Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns and we will do our best to help you.

We will be checking our email daily and monitoring students’ usage on the above websites.

Continue to read each day.  Encourage your child to write summaries of the books that they read- even the books they read on Raz Kids!

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work to provide the best for our students,

First Grade Teachers

December News

Thank you to everyone who came on our trip to High Velocity. We had such a good time!!!! The students practiced the need for rules and good sportsmanship. What a great way to wrap up our social studies unit.

In math, we are working on building a ten to make adding two numbers easier. Also we continue to work on story problems. Remember to have your child draw a picture, and a number bond to explain their thinking.

In science, we are beginning to learn about what produces light and the different properties of light. After winter break, I will be asking students to bring in flashlights with working batteries to use for class experiments. We will keep the flashlights for about a month. Then they will be returned home.

In social studies, we are discussing basic needs for families. Also we have been comparing different family traditions. The concept of past, present, and future are also being addressed. The more you use the vocabulary; past, present and future at home the quicker it will become part of their vocabulary

We have a google classroom that was just set up. The class code, if you need it is l8zvm7i I hope to be posting more information on it later. You may acess pearson easybridge and google classroom through your child’s clever login..

Sincerely,

Kindergarten Reading

Dear Parents,

Since November 2018, I have been working with the kindergarten classes as the kindergarten reading consultant.  The teachers made a list of students that I service.  The last several weeks, we have been testing and will be resuming our regular schedule soon.  Some students will change reading consultants and others will stay the same.

It is important that your child reads every day.  It is part of our school improvement program.  Each child has a reading log.  Please make sure that the time is recorded and that you sign the sheet.  It shows the students that reading is important.  If you do not have a reading log, please write your child’s name, date, minutes read and sign or initial on a note paper and I will see that they get a new log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at neuensb@dearborn schools.org or

827-1800.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Neuenschwander
