Remote Learning Week of 5/04 to 5/08

U.S. History

Good afternoon everyone,

I wanted to thank each and every one of you who submitted your reading and video reflection sheets this week. I will be responding to the rest of your emails and getting the new grades updated in the next day or two. There have many changes that are beyond our control and we wanted to thank you for being flexible with us as we try to get everything organized. For this week we will continue having your read the four articles that we are posting today and have you complete a reading reflection assignment for just one of the four articles. Since google meets is still suspended and we are having issues with Big Blue Button we are going to have you watch one more Crash Course video and complete the video reflection. Watching the video and completing the reflection sheet for the video will count as our “meeting” for this week. Starting next week, I will begin recording a lesson for you to watch and complete a reflection.

*The article reflection and the video reflection templates will be at the bottom of this post under the Supplemental Materials section.

Listed below is a check list to help you keep your week organized:

Vocabulary Terms for This Week

Vocabulary Terms-Chapter 21–Civil Rights

Black Panthers-A revolutionary black nationalist group who worked to fight poverty and police brutality in the ghettos

Brown v. Board of Education-A landmark U.S. Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.

Civil Rights Act of 1964-A landmark piece of civil rights legislation which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin and ended unequal voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools and the workplace.

Civil Rights Act of 1968-A landmark piece of legislation that provided for equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or national origin and made it a federal crime to “by force or by threat of force, injure, intimidate, or interfere with anyone … based on their race, color, religion, or national origin.”

De Facto Segregation-A form of segregation that exists due to historical practice or customs

De Jure Segregation-A form of segregation that exists by law

Freedom Riders-Civil rights activists who rode buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 to challenge the non-enforcement of United States Supreme Court decisions which had ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional

Sit-ins-A form of non-violent protest in which African Americans sate a segregated lunch counters and refused to leave until they were served

Student Nonviolence Coordination Committee (SNCC)-An important Civil Rights organization which formed during a student meeting at Shaw University in April 1960

Voting Rights Act of 1965-A landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits racial discrimination when voting by eliminating literacy tests and poll taxes

For this week we are asking that you read the four articles posted below which examine some of the monumental figures and events that fueled the Civil Rights movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Remember that you are required to read all four articles, but you only have to submit a reflections log for one of the articles. After you compete the reflection sheet posted in the supplemental materials section on this post please save the document as a word document or google doc email it to me at murrayr@dearbornschools.org by 11:59 pm on Sunday May 10th. Be sure to use the check list I have included to make sure that you don’t skip a step.
