U.S. History

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope that everyone is doing well and that you had a nice Memorial Day Weekend. As we enter our final three weeks of school it is imperative that you work on catching up on your missing work during our social learning period. I have sent individual emails to those who are missing work and I will continue to do this weekly until we end our school year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. Also there will be no video for you to watch this week just the article reflection logs to complete.

Vocabulary Terms-Chapter 23-An Era of Social Change

United Farm Workers Organizing Committee A labor union for farmworkers employed in the United States.

Trail of Broken Treaties MarchA cross-country protest that was staged in the autumn of 1972 by American Indian and First Nations organizations who were concerned about the lack of support shown by the government for Indian rights.

FeminismThe advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

The Feminine MysticA book by Betty Friedan that is widely credited with sparking the beginning of second-wave feminism in the United States.

National Organization for Women A group of feminists who were dedicated to actively challenging sex discrimination in all areas of American society.

Roe v. Wade– A landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction.

Equal Rights Amendment– A proposed amendment to the US Constitution stating that civil rights may not be denied on the basis of one’s sex.

Counterculture a way of life and set of attitudes opposed to or at variance with the prevailing social norm.

Hippies– A member of the counterculture of the 1960s, originally a youth movement that began in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread to other countries around the world.

Woodstock– a three day festival of peace and music held in August 1969, on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York.

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope all is well and that you and your families are healthy. This Friday through Monday we will be celebrating Memorial Day weekend. So our work for this week will be due by 11:59 on Thursday May 21st 2020. Our work for next week will be posted on Tuesday May 26th. I hope you enjoy the long weekend off and remember that with only four week left be sure that you are all caught up with your work for our class. Be sure to check Student Connect to see which logs you are missing and if you still are unsure shoot us an email and I will gladly help you out. Also instead of a google meet or Crash Course video we will be watching a video titled How WWII and Vietnam Veterans Were Treated Differently and completing a reflection log that goes along with it. Don’t forget to complete your reading article reflection also.

Vocabulary Terms-Chapter 22–The Vietnam War Years (Part II)

  • Silent Majority-An unspecified large group of people in a country or group who do not express their opinions publicly. The term was popularized by United States President Richard Nixon in a November 3, 1969.
  • Tet Offensive-A series of attacks staged by North Vietnamese forces beginning in the early hours of January 31, 1968. They consisted of simultaneous attacks by some 85,000 troops under the direction of the North Vietnamese government.
  • Tonkin Gulf Resolution-A resolution authorized President Lyndon Johnson to “take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression” by the communist government of North Vietnam.
  • Vietnamization-One of President Nixon’s policies aimed at ending  America’s involvement in the Vietnam War training and equipping South Vietnam’s forces against North Vietnam.
  • War Powers Act-A federal law intended to check the president’s power to commit the United States to an armed conflict without the consent of the U.S. Congress.

I wanted to thank each and every one of you who submitted your reading and video reflection sheets this week. There have many changes that are beyond our control and we wanted to thank you for being flexible with us as we get everything organized. For this week we will continue having your read the four articles that we are posting today and have you complete the reading reflection assignment for just one of the four articles. Since google meets is still suspended, we are having issues with Big Blue Button I am having some recording issues we continue to watch Crash Course videos and completing reflections on them until I can figure out a better way to record lessons. Watching the video and completing the reflection sheet for the video will count as our “meeting” for this week. Listed below is a check list to help you keep your week organized.

Vocabulary Terms- Chapter 22-The Vietnam War Years

  • Agent Orange-A powerful herbicide used by U.S. military forces during the Vietnam War to eliminate the forest cover and crops of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops.
  • Domino Theory-A theory during the Cold War that said if one country in a region came under the influence of communism, then the surrounding countries would fall to communism as well.
  • Ho Chi Minh Trail-Trail was a network of roads built from North Vietnam to South Vietnam through the neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia, to provide logistical support to the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War.
  • Napalm-A highly flammable jelly like liquid substance used during the Vietnam war in incendiary bombs and flamethrowers that sticks to a person’s skin and causes severe burns when on fire.
  • Pentagon Papers-A set of officially titled documents known as the “Report of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Vietnam Task Force,” designed to act as a comprehensive history of American involvement in the Vietnam from the end of World War II through 1967

I will be responding to the rest of your emails and getting the new grades updated in the next day or two. Vocabulary Terms for This Week

Vocabulary Terms-Chapter 21–Civil Rights

Black Panthers-A revolutionary black nationalist group who worked to fight poverty and police brutality in the ghettos

Brown v. Board of Education-A landmark U.S. Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.

Civil Rights Act of 1964-A landmark piece of civil rights legislation which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin and ended unequal voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools and the workplace.

Civil Rights Act of 1968-A landmark piece of legislation that provided for equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or national origin and made it a federal crime to “by force or by threat of force, injure, intimidate, or interfere with anyone … based on their race, color, religion, or national origin.”

De Facto Segregation-A form of segregation that exists due to historical practice or customs

De Jure Segregation-A form of segregation that exists by law

Freedom Riders-Civil rights activists who rode buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 to challenge the non-enforcement of United States Supreme Court decisions which had ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional

Sit-ins-A form of non-violent protest in which African Americans sate a segregated lunch counters and refused to leave until they were served

Student Nonviolence Coordination Committee (SNCC)-An important Civil Rights organization which formed during a student meeting at Shaw University in April 1960

Voting Rights Act of 1965-A landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits racial discrimination when voting by eliminating literacy tests and poll taxes
