Week of March 22nd

Reading: Dr. Seuess- The foot book (opposites); The cat and the hat (rhyming), Green eggs and ham (rhyming)

Phonemic awareness- l-blends: clap, flap, slap, plug, block, glue

Spelling/word Family/Sight words: funny, cap, tap, map, flap, slap, clap

Writing: Opinion- I like spring because___. Students will  write at least 2 reasons why they like spring.

Math: number bonds/part-part-whole. Students will build and create number bonds in many ways and use multiple manipulatives such as unifix/linking cubes, objects, pictures, fingers, numbers and base ten blocks to complete number sentences. We are reviewing  composing and decomposing within 5.  This will help with completing missing addends coming soon.

Science: we are learning about living and non-living things. we are also learning about plant needs which include: soil, air, water, sun, space

Social  Studies: Finishing maps this week.

Week of March 12th

Reading: We will be reading short passages and practicing answering questions using multiple choice options. We will practice locating answers in the text. We will also have statements with specific instructions. With both activities, we will be practicing comprehension skills with restating the questions in a sentence form.

Phonics: l-blends- we will practice words that begin with cl-, bl-, fl-, gl-, pl-, sl-. (examples: clip, black, flop, glue, plug, slip)

Sight words: where, here

Word family:-un (sun, fun, bun, run,

Spelling words: sun, fun, bun, run, here, where

Writing: We will be writing a narrative about a special play date. Strategies to focus on include:

  • capitalize the beginning letter in the sentence
  • put a end mark/punctuation mark at the end of a thought.
  • use transition words: first, then, after that, finally/in the end
  • use dialogue: your characters need to say something- Mom said…., I said…..

Math: We will be comparing sets of objects. We will discuss making a group to match and having one more, one less and equal to the amount. We will also have a math test this week. This that will be covered will be:

  • counting by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s to 100
  • counting on from any number 0-100
  • counting a group of objects and writing the amount down
  • comparing number using the symbols: ><=
  • adding and subtracting within 10

Social Studies: We will revisit mapping skills this week. We will work on neighborhood maps in groups. We will explore the compass rose  (north, south, east, west)

Week of March 5th

Happy 100th day!

We are suppppper excited we are 100 days smarter in kindergarten!!!

This week:

Reading: We will continue Fairy Tales: Cinderella (infer the meaning from the text read aloud); Jack and the Bean stalk (identify the text types);  Rumpelstiltskin  (identify the problem and the solution)

Spelling: top, pop, hop, two, three

Word family: hop, top, mop, pop, flop, prop, crop, drop- creating a popcorn box with -op words

Sight words: two, three (sight word test coming up).

Review attached: 22 words

Writing: Writing a narrative about a time when they got hurt. Our sentence starter will be: One time,___.

Areas of focus in writing-

  • when to put a period. (no more run on sentences. Period means to stop and start with a capital letter for the new sentence.
  • when writing a story, just write one story and add details.

Math: we will be compare items and numbers. Compare items and numbers using math vocabulary how much more than, less than and same as.  Using a ruler to control and directly match its pair to see if we have enough. We will be having a math fact test next week.

Things to focus on:

  • addition
  • subtraction
  • count by 1-100, 5’s to 100, 10’s to 100
  • count how many objects, ten frames, tally marks, scatter dots,
  • count on from a given number
  • comparing numbers (<,>,=)

Social Studies:

We are exploring and identifying important parts of a map and globe. We are learning about map keys, compass rose, roads, buildings, land, water, birds eye view and directions.

Week of February 26th

Reading: We will explore different genres and begin to identify them. We will be reading different types of fairy tales. This week will focus on The three little pigs, Rumplestiltskin, Goldilocks and the three bears. We will also practice comprehension skills such as: retelling sequence, identifying the morale/lesson of the story, identifying the problem and the solution. Key text features on what a fairytale entails:

  • It is a make believe story
  • It begins with once upon a time
  • Ends with happily ever after
  • There is magic
  • Characters: kings, queens, prince, princesses, animals that speak
  • Settings: kingdoms, forests
  • Lesson to be learned
  • Good overcomes evil

Spelling: big, dig, pig, jump, one

Word family: (-ig: pig, dig, wig, jig, zig, twig, big, fig, rig, etc)

Sight words: jump, one

Writing: This week will be focusing on a narrative.  Students will have to choose an important or significant event in their lives to share and use narrative anchor chart to guide in their writing. Ideas we learned about narrative include:

  • It is a real story
  • It has a beginning, middle, end
  • Use transitions: first, next, last/finally
  • Make sure your story makes sense
  • Make sure your writing matches your picture
  • Don’t forget the title
  • Basic mechanics: capitalize the first letter of the sentence, space between your words, spell sight words correctly

Math: We are learning about volume and capacity. We will compare the volume inside of objects and identify items that take up more, less or equal volume/capacity. We will also start learning about area and base ten blocks and how to make and build them from numbers presented. Students should be able to write numbers 0-100.

Social Studies: We are studying Geography. Its all about learning about maps and the key parts to reading a map which include: the map key, buildings, roads/streets, compass, flat map and globe. We will learn how to use google maps and how small we are in the real world.

  • March is reading month starts this Thursday. Letters will be coming home along with calendar. Every week your child will be required to hand in a reading ticket with the amount of reading minutes signed by you- the parent. I will post the entire March is reading month info later this week.

Week of February 12th

Reading: We will reading  non-fiction text and searching for the main idea and identifying one detail. We will read about animals and their habitats. your child should say: The book’s main idea is about ___. The ___ lives in a ___habitat.

Sight words: for, you, me, love

Word family: -et (pet, met, set, bet, jet, let, net)

Phonics: th digraph (thumb, thermos, thirty)

Spelling Words: for, you, me, get, set, met

Writing: We will be writing about animal habitats. We will state and write our main idea and one detail about their habitat. We will do different animals each day to encourage continued practice.

Math: We will continue to explore measurement using the pan balance. We will also explore which items are heavier and lighter in comparison to each other. We will also establish a standard weight amount (pennies) to use on a balance to compare to other objects.  When working on the homework, you will notice that a pan balance is a tool to help compare weight of two objects.

Science: We will explore different types of wind. We will learn different winds can be found in severe weather types such as tornadoes, hurricanes and tsunamis.

We are celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, Feb. 14th. If you would like to send your child with valentines or a treat to share on that day, we have 23 students. This is optional.
