Water Bottle CER

For this CER, I am going to have your work on it on the computers. In order to do this, you will need to do what you did with the Earthquake questions and make a copy of a Google Doc.

Step 1: Open the following link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-BTQaZ4swD95B9Psof86Wq-zzvdMebEWNHGVqcVnVLo/edit?usp=sharing

Step 2: Once the link is open, go to “File” in the top left, and move down to “Make a Copy”

Step 3: When the Box comes up asking you to name the document, please title it FIRST NAME LAST NAME Plastic Water bottle CER but please change first name last name to your actual first and last name.

Step 4: Once you have named the file, hit OK. This will open up your copy of the file.

Step 5: On your copy, move to the “Share” button in the right corner and share your document with me. (If you are in 6th hour, please share with Ms. Hussein as well, husseia is her email)

Plastic Water Bottles

Hello students,

If you have been absent this week, we have been focusing on Plastic Water Bottles. first we looked at how the use of plastic has some disastrous consequences on our environment, as well as some of the insane costs that go into the production of the bottles. The article that had that information can be found below.

Disadvantages of Plastic Bottles

Today, we looked at the other end of things, at some of the advantages we gain by the introduction of plastic bottles. The article of the advantages can be found below.

The Advantages of Plastic Bottles

It was also an assignment to annotate both of these articles while reading them.

Tomorrow, you are going to be tasked with making a choice. You need to choose if you are in favor of plastic water bottle use, or opposed to it. Obviously, in real life we are able to agree with a little bit of both sides, but for the sake of tomorrow’s activity, you have to choose.

Test Study Resources

Students,

Remember you have your test about how the earth formed on Monday. This is an important test, as it will be your final summative grade for the 3rd card marking. The purpose of this blog post is to provide you with additional resources (other than your ISN) to help you prepare.

The test will be on the following topics:

  • Tectonic Plates
  • Earthquakes
  • Layers of the Earth

The first resource is a Quizlet provided by Ms. Duquette. This includes flash cards, information, and a test so you can practice the concepts being taught.

https://quizlet.com/278370173/layers-of-the-earth-diagram/

I have also included (below) a link to the jeopardy game that some classes were able to play today. A note, when making a copy of the slides, the “hyperlinks” stopped working. What this means is you will not be able to click through the points like in jeopardy. Simply treat this like a slide show and go Question-Answer-Question-Answer to review. The last 5 questions are not anything you need for the test.

Earthquake Informational Website

In class today, we started working on an online document to help research additional information about Earthquakes. This document can be accessed using your Google Drive, but there is a specific method you will need to follow to make sure you have YOUR OWN copy of the document, not mine.

PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE WORKING ON THE WORKSHEET

Step 1: Access the document below; this is a class copy, DO NOT WRITE ON IT.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pHBccnoepnGSAalXkvUyicUtiQrYu51JOtNNPHHx7hY/edit?usp=sharing

Step 2: You will need to make a copy of this document. To do this:

  • Click on “File” in the top left
  • Move down to “Make a Copy” and click.
  • Name your file <Your Name> Earthquake Website Questions. (Example: mine would be titled “Mr. Bailey EARTHQUAKE WEBSITE QUESTIONS”)
  • A new window should open, this is your copy and you may type on this version.

Step 3: Once you have made a copy, you will need to share it with me. Click on Share in the RIGHT CORNER and type my email (baileym@dearbornschools.org). IF YOU DO NOT SHARE THIS DOCUMENT, I WILL BE UNABLE TO GRADE IT!

Exploring Earthquake’s Lab

Last week, we took sometime to learn about Earthquake’s, their cause, and the consequences they have on the surface of the Earth. We put our engineering hats on, with a goal in mind: to design a building that would be able to withstand the effects of a quake.

Our first steps involved planning out a design on how we wanted our buildings to look. The catch, we only had a budget of $500 and each material cost a portion of that budget, Toothpicks were $5 each, marshmallows were $10.

After our initial designs, we were tasked with building the first version of our building. We were able to make three changes to our building during the building process. We made changes based on how sturdy we felt our completed buildings were. If we had the money in our budget, we were also able to pay to “test” our building.

After the final test, many buildings were able to survive the earthquake. Others were not so lucky.

Organelle Study help

Hey all,

We have that short quiz on organelles tomorrow, and I wanted to give you all access to a guide to help you focus on what is most important to study… a study guide, some might call it!

Study Guide for Organelles

Cells Alive

Students,

Yesterday and today we worked on the computer program “Cells Alive.” This program allows us to get a better idea about the parts that make up a cell, called organelles.

The website can be found using THIS LINK. and clicking START THE ANIMATION. Be sure to click either Animal Cell or Plant Cell underneath the box on the page that opens.

Cells Alive Worksheet

^^ The worksheet that is used for this website can be found above.

You need to have the Animal and Plant Cell side done, with both pictures and a summary of each organelle, done by Thursday, February 8th

The section for BACTERIA is not required, it is simply extra 😉 work

Card Marking 2 Report Cards

Students (and parents)

We are officially at the half way point of the school year and with it the second card marking report cards. This next part requires your help, as I want to make sure everything is correct.

I currently have the student/parent connect displaying the 2nd card marking grades. If you think there is an issue with your grade, you need to let me know today before I send out the grades to be printed. As much as I would like to take care of it, I cannot keep track of small changes to 130 grades. This includes things like a missing score that you turned in (and can prove), incorrect test grades, or a grade in the grade book that is less than on the assignment. This does not mean asking me what you can do to get an A in the class.

Talk-To-The Text Assignment

Today’s assignment was a short reading about Photosynthesis.

If you were absent, or forgot the assignment at school, you will need to print the reading provided and “Talk-to-the-Text.” Photosynthesis shouldn’t be an entirely new topic for many of you, which means you should have plenty of prior knowledge and connections to use for making connections.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS READING

****REMINDER****

Next Friday is the end of the second card marking. I will accept any late or missing work NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, January 24th. It is your responsibility to get those in on time. If you are missing a NewsELA article, you MUST, email me when you complete it so I know to go and look.

I have also added a new link on the banner of the blog titled “Science Fair.” This will take you to a page specifically dedicated to information regarding the science fair projects. It will be updated over time, and will make it so you will not need to scroll through all my posts to find the correct one.
