Hello all! This week we’ll be having a few online Google hangouts so that you can interact and have some time to ask questions, see classmates, and do some learning. Read through the assignments for the week, and find the information to use for joining us below.

Our class nickname will be ela6melvin.

Assignments for the week

Complete 8 metacognitive reactions by Friday (reading for 20 minutes per day). Create a copy of the Online Meta Log and record your reactions and what the text says. Share your document with Mr. Melvin by Friday, April 24th at 11:59 p.m. You can access e-books through the Dearborn public libraries.

Complete IXL.com 5th Grade F.2 “Similes and Metaphors with Pictures”  to 90 or above by Friday, April 24th at 11:59 p.m. Check out this Flocabulary video to find out more about similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, onomatopeia, and other types of figurative language. Use the username ‘stoutmiddle’ and password ‘stoutmiddle’ to view it.

Log in to iLearn and complete Monday’s quiz after joining us for a hangout at 10:00 a.m. or at 1:15 p.m. You may watch videos to prepare for Wednesday’s hangout.

We will begin doing some activities, answering questions about assignments, and checking in on each other in these sessions, so please try to attend. You may want to add these Google extensions to see all of your classmates in grid view or to raise your hand/react when your mic is muted.

Please follow these expectations when you join us:

Google Meet/Hangout Etiquette Guide for Students

  1. Take a look at your video BEFORE joining the Hangout. Make sure that everything in the video (especially the background) is appropriate. 
  2. When you enter the Meet/Hangout, mute yourself (If you are already not muted.)
  3. When you have a question, type in the textbox and wait for your teacher to call on you.
  4. When you have something to contribute to what is being said, but it is not your turn, use the chat feature in the right-hand corner. 
  5. Wait for the teacher to call on you to unmute yourself. 
  6. Only one student should contribute/talk at a time
  7. Look into the camera when you are talking.
  8. Stay attentive. Pay attention to your teacher or other students who are speaking.
